Reports Suggest Nintendo Is Gearing NX For Mid-2016 Release

I hope you’ve a salt cellar handy, because this report should only be taken with a hefty pinch of salt, if not several handfuls of the white stuff.

DigiTimes have posted a report suggesting that Taiwanese manufacturing companies Foxconn and Pegatron have been vying for Nintendo’s business with the NX console, with pilot manufacturing beginning in October before orders being finalised in February and a console release in July 2016.

To put this into context, it’s important to look at DigiTimes’ previous output, with a lot of similar stories surrounding Apple’s upcoming products. By looking at leaked information from sources on the manufacture side of the equation, DigiTimes can often get a sneaky look at an emerging product before it’s truly ready for the limelight.

However, by rooting around for such details so early in the manufacture process, DigiTimes have garnered a reputation for being very hit and miss. Rumours of an iPad mini-like device swirled for years before such a device actually became available, while there have long been persistent rumours surrounding Apple designed televisions and touchscreen iMacs, which simply haven’t come true. On the other hand, they have had plenty of hits alongside their misses, especially as release nears.

Apple and companies like Nintendo do, out of necessity, work very closely with their manufacturing partners during the development of a product to prototype designs and devices, but there can be delays, changes of plans and more than a few spanners thrown in the works along the way. It means that there can be a poor signal to noise ratio in DigiTimes’ reports.

Yet this particular story does have a certain ring of truth to it. Having announced that the NX is in the works back in March, it would be a poor decision to keep consumers and investors waiting for too long, especially with the Wii U’s continually disappointing sales.

  1. Whilst I doubt the console will appeal to me, it will be fascinating to see their approach and philosophy of the console after the commercial failure of the Wii U, yet hardcore Nintendo fans have been quite well served with first party content…

Do they target PS4/X1 level power or go for a lower price point? Maybe 3DS compatibility as rumoured.

    • If it exceeds ps4 in power I will probably get one but I expect it will be a handheld with TV output. Which would exceed ps3 in power but not xbone

  2. From The Conference call translation: “Regarding your concern about what will happen to Wii U or what will happen to Nintendo 3DS, NX is a new platform, so the installed base will have to be built up from zero. When NX is launched, there already will be a certain volume of Nintendo 3DS and Wii U hardware widely existing in the market, so from a software business perspective, it would be highly inefficient to stop releasing titles for Nintendo 3DS or Wii U right after the launch of NX. Therefore, while we are preparing NX for the future, we are discussing within our internal development teams as well as with the second-party developers we co-develop software with and also with third-party software publishers about how to continue creating software for Wii U and Nintendo 3DS.”

I’m sorry? Sounds like they’re killing the 3DS as well as Wii-U which makes sense. Hot rumours for a while have been speculating about the NX being a hybrid system to supersede both. Imagine the current Wii U gamepad being a true portable that syncs with its home console sibling, allowing one unified platform for developers, thus simplifying development time and cost. PLUS, for gamers, you get seamless continuity in gameplay as you’re still only using the same device when you travel!

  3. Throwing salt over my shoulder as we speak. I wish Ninty all the best in whichever direction this new console takes. The market can only benefit from having a third player.

  4. They’ll surprise us by revealing it’s a VR headset.

    • Or it’ll be a scree you pop in your toilet so you can play actual wee games.
