WeView Verdict: Sunset Overdrive

In the console gaming world, a platform is often measured by the number of quality exclusives it has. It means games like Sunset Overdrive often receive a lot of hype and attention before they launch, with many gamers eagerly waiting to see if they’re getting (or missing out on) a quality product.

Based on your feedback, it seems like most of you really enjoyed it, but before we dig into your comments and recommendations, psychobudgie brought up a good point that’s worth discussion. Knowing that TSA started as a PlayStation-only site, and assuming that most people on here that own an Xbox One probably already tried Sunset Overdrive, he asked, “How good does the game have to be when Buy It likely means buy the console to play it on?” For some people on here, his question is likely valid, as they might not own an Xbox One.

I tried to think if I’ve ever played a game that was so good that I would’ve bought a console just for that game. Personally, I don’t think I have, but I love that his comment got me thinking along those lines. Is Sunset Overdrive worth owning an Xbox One for? Based on what I’ve seen and heard, probably not by itself, but take a look at what others are saying and you can be the judge.

JustTaylorNow started us off by stating that their expectations were something along the lines of inFamous, but that didn’t turn out to be the case. They said that the game “is very colourful indeed, the humour is typical Insomniac,” yet also said that, “the cartoonish, comic book look did not really appeal to me.” Wonkey-willy made a similar association by saying that “its no holds barred approach to an open world was satisfying but not as fulfilling as Infamous.” Just prior to that, willy also noted that it was a “grinder’s paradise”, but that the upgrade system was a little confusing.

JR. had wonderful things to say about the game, starting with the formula the game seems to follow: “Ratchet & Clank + inFamous + Crazy = Sunset OD.” They went on to praise the weaponry and humour, as well as the game’s traversal, as well as something that addresses the question we asked at the beginning of this piece, stating, “This game was the reason I bought an XB1 and I don’t regret that decision one bit.”

PrebbLord shared a similar sentiment by stating that it was also one of the reasons they bought an Xbox One, just before calling it “Fun, hilarious, colourful and crazy.” They also noted, “The online multiplayer does get a bit stale quite fast, but it’s still very fun nonetheless.” Starman chimed in and said, “A generous auto aim makes shooting the hordes of enemies frantic and enjoyable,” and that this was “one of the best exclusives on Xbox.”

Our comment of the week goes to Kennykazey, who had a short but sweet description of the game that’s sure to make almost anyone want to see it in action:

It’s Jet Set Radio with guns and energy drinks.

Buy it.

So in the end we came up with four people saying Buy It and two recommending Sale It, so if you’ve got an Xbox One it sure seems worth your time to pick it up at some point or another.

Tomorrow’s WeView will be the first in a series of Retro WeViews. This time around Dave will be looking at Super Metroid.

  1. I wouldn’t buy a Xbox One just for this but I would buy Sunset OD if it came out on PC.

  2. It is a valid comment re buying the platform though financially I couldn’t.

WipEout – the original reason to buy a PSX.

  3. The annoying thing about this one is that it seems like it’s a game that is right up my alley. Buying an Xbox one just to play it though sadly wasn’t.

    • So you enjoy the PS4 for a good few years to come and eventually pick up an XO when it’s cheap as chips and has a wealth of games you haven’t played. That’s pretty much how I’m thinking about it. :-)

  4. I bought an Xbox (original) because of halo. And doom was the reason for investing in a PC.. I don’t think any has recently been good enough to justify buying a console for. Although if I didn’t already own PlayStations, I may have been swayed by Naughty Dogs work..

As for sunset overdrive? Not really my thing, although I may take a look if it ever came out on PC.

  5. This was definitely the game that swayed my decision to buy an XB1 but I was also taking into account a number of other exclusives such as Tomb Raider and Halo 5 (Before playing the MC Collection and not liking it). If it wasn’t for Sunset OD and Tomb Raider, I wouldn’t have bought an XB1. And if it wasn’t for Tomb Raider, I don’t think I would have bought an XB1 just for Sunset OD. Even though Sunset OD was the deciding factor for buying an XB1.

The great thing is, that now I have an XB1, I’m more open to trying new games or franchises I’m not familiar with/never heard of. And while I do use the PS4 as my main console, it’s great not having to fret about missing out on any console exclusive games. Best of both worlds.

    • Is anyone having any issues with the TSA website? I’ve been unable to access the site a few times in the last few days. Webpage unavailable? Wondering if it’s just me.

      • Yeah it’s been acting up for me also, litrally 5 minutes ago i couldn’t access the site.

      • I guess there is a question over where to post this stuff, but you realise that you are posting that the site isn’t working on the site… How are folk supposed to read it/respond if they too cannot access?? ;)

But on a similar note, I too had the same thing a few moments ago. :)

      • Haha good point. It’s just, I had the same issue a few times last week and I don’t use Twitter or Facebook anymore.

  6. I don’t think I’m very far in (just been stopped by the invisible walls trying to fly out) but quite a fun game very chaotic.

  7. There are very few games worth buying a console for on their own. And those will differ depending on taste. But a collection of good titles can easily sway a consumer, and Sunset Overdrive is part of the Xbone exclusive collection.

Thanks for the mention btw. :-)
