Community Chronicle: 04/10/15

I think it can go without saying that, while I’m overjoyed at Wales’ progression through to the quarter finals of the Rugby World Cup, the whole competition will be poorer for the inevitable loss of enthusiasm from the host nation’s supporters at England’s exit during the group stages.

Though there were one or two glimmers of hope, Australia were simply too good for England last night, and any sign of a last ditch comeback were nullified by a pair of reckless challenges and a yellow card.

There were some good discussion points on TSA this week, albeit not ones that had gamers overflowing with joy. It turns out that Rainbow Six: Siege won’t include a traditional single player campaign, and this has quite naturally gone down poorly.

Double-o-dave was particularly vitriolic as he wrote, “Rainbow 6 something or other years ago, then Vegas 1 & 2 were amongst the best single player campaign experiences I’ve ever had (not to mention the Terrorist Hunts). Not that it matters, because from what I’ve played of the beta, it doesn’t resemble any of the games I came to love at all. Seems to me like they’ve just tacked on the Rainbow 6 name onto a 5 x 5 siege game that doesn’t interest me at all.”

Starman was also taken aback, as he said he “Didn’t see that coming, remember this was originally Rainbow 6 Patriots and that looked to have a very thought out story mode. To scrap it altogether when it must have had a huge amount of time spent on it is very surprising.”

And it’s even led to gazzagb cancelling his preorder. “No single player coupled with what I’ve seen on twitch doesn’t give me much faith,” he said. “It’s a huge disappointment for my most anticipated game of the year. Depending on the general feedback after its release (let’s hope that the online actually works), I might pick it up after Christmas.”

Clearly the long term fans of the series aren’t too happy with this turn of events…

However, one bit of news that did have people jumping for joy was that Three Fields, a studio founded by former Criterion staff, are working on a spiritual successor to the Burnout games. But which game from the series should they make a spiritual successor to?

There’s a lot of love for Burnout Paradise or Takedown, but the overwhelming response was one of simple excitement. Amphlett said, “I must admit to being a little excited about that headline as well. Oh go on, I’m VERY EXCITED!”

Ron_mcphaty was similarly enthusiastic, as he shouted, “COME ON!!! Best gaming news of the year! Fingers crossed that the soundtrack is excellent, that’s my only concern because, let’s be honest, the game is likely to otherwise be perfect.”

However, DJ Judas was clear about which game he wanted a spiritual successor to:

The number of calls for a paradise successor are quite depressing, making Burnout open-world removed a lot of what made it great in the first place for me. Though I do understand that for many people open-world is a superior approach, I sincerely hope they’re going for a successor to Takedown, not Paradise.

So, which Burnout game would you want a direct sequel to?

Finally, this week saw the announcement of October’s PlayStation Plus games, and the inevitable weighing up of their worth versus your game time.

Stefhutch20 wrote:

I’m getting increasingly frustrated with PS Plus updates, not because of the titles on offer (which, in my opinion, are actually pretty good), but because it brings out the absolute worst in gamers. Just because one person thinks a game is bad, that doesn’t mean everyone does, but these people talk like they’re speaking for the entire gaming community. I sincerely hope that anyone threatening to leave PS Plus actually does, as that way I’ll no longer have to endure their presence online.

This was actually one of the more positive reactions to an update dominated by indie games, though. DividSmythe said “I’ve got to say I’m really happy with next month’s offering. I’d have bought Super Meat Boy, I nearly bought Broken Age a few weeks ago and I’d rather have Chariot on PS4 but it’ll do on PS3 as that’s what I let the kids play anyway. All the others are a bonus.”

And to put any reaction into perspective, Starman added that “The thing is the value of the games is subjective. They may be worth it to you but some wouldn’t pay £12 for a pixel retro game, however good metacritic says it is.”

Carrot381 kicked us off this week by finishing the wonderful Ni no Kuni around the middle of the week, before shifting focus to Bloodborne and getting through the first few bosses without too much difficulty (the internet helped)

R1MJAW finished grinding through Mad Max to get the platinum trophy for Mad Max, before turning to another driving game and finishing his first season in F1 2015. He said it was quite enjoyable, but then he also thinks that Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 is “pretty good”, so I’m not sure I can trust his judgement anymore…

Avenger has passed the halfway mark in Halo: The Master Chief Collection, which means there’s two games from four that have been completed, but I doubt that anywhere near as much anger was generated by the end of Halo 2 compared to the way Andrewww felt let down by The Witcher 3 ending that he got. At least ron_mcphatty enjoyed the ending to Metal Gear Solid V – another controversial game ending.

Finally, Youles polished off the FIFA 16 platinum trophy in short order, and finally managed to get the Community Ambassador trophy to pop in Project CARS and is fast approaching the 100% point for the Black Ops 2 trophy list as well.

A inferior race is back this week with the latest update to the 2015 trophy leaderboard. Head over to page 2 to see what it’s all about and how you can be counted.

Aside from that, I leave you on this page with the usual submission form.

  1. I have cancelled my pre order with Rainbow 6. As for Burnout I’d like an upgrade of Point of Impact and Takedown or Paradise 2
Congrats to everyones accomplishments including Youles with the Project Cars glitch from his twitter feed.
    I also don’t trust R1MJAW about THPS
Also someone please help me get off Fifa 16 Ultimate Team… I cannot stop playing it xD

    • Cheers Del. Nothing you can do about FUT, just let the addiction take its course! ;)

      • Well I’ve played a good couple of hours of Tony Hawks and haven’t experienced any glitches for what is supposed to be a glitchy mess,it’s very similar to older Tony Hawks games though for some reason it feels slightly faster to me.

  2. I just had to google ‘vitriolic’ – that’s pretty much spot on ;)

    • “vitriolic”that sounded like a cocktail oh! how wrong was I..

      • Word of the day, guys. :)

      • If only I knew how to pronounce it.
It’s definitely going to be used in an argument against my missus when I get a new one! ;)

  3. Congrats all on this weeks achievements ;)

  4. Not quite sure I can understand the leaderboard changes, as the percentages don’t seem to be in the correct order. Naturally I highlight this as the guy who should have first place :P

    • Oops… I forgot to sort the leaderboard. My bad

  5. Congrats to all who canceled their preorder. This is the best way to make them know that the public is not okay with their decisions.

    • They’ll probably say the sales were affected by the shift towards mobile gaming rather than admit their mistakes.

      • lol the biggest mistake was trying to re-invent the series…which some years ago was spot on.the mechanics, game play and single player campaign ..now they gone and fu””ed it up!

    • Oh, my mate bought it an thought it was shit value for money, then tried to return it to Tesco Direct, or whatever they’re called. They say no, any idea what the score is on returning games? Seems to me like if you bought a duff phone you could easily get a refund within 30 days, but games are a different kettle of salmon.

      • There is a difference between a duff phone and you not liking a piece of software. In the first it’s clearly broken and not fit for purpose, where as the latter is subjective – you can’t read a book and return it because the story wasn’t engaging. The product still met the “of reasonable quality and fit for purpose” test.

The new UK legislation now covers games and digital purchases but the test is still the same – if the game is broken on day one (aka Batman on PC, constantly crashes, servers down etc) then you could be entitled to a refund, but it also allows for the manufacturer to repair rather than refund, which in our scenario is patch the product, within a reasonable time frame.

Of course I wonder what the situation is if you don’t have internet access in order for the game to be patched… how do you prove to the Tesco clerk that your console isn’t connected to the interent?

Either way though just because you thought it was crap or not value for money doesn’t entitle you to a refund.

  6. After numerous psychotherapy sessions and after joining the Witcher 3 bad ending victims anonymous I finally can get on with my life… ;o)

Still, I can’t quite believe what they do to people who play their game for endless hours. But I’ll finally have time to play other things in my backlog.
