What We Played #236: Football Manager, Life Is Strange & Danganronpa

You know the feeling when you have a little tickle at the back of your throat, and you think to yourself, “Uh oh, I’m coming down with something, aren’t I?” Well that was me yesterday, and now I’ve got all the wonderful aches and pains of a cold. Wonderful.

Still, I’ve got plenty of gaming in and have played a handful of rather varied games this week. There was a spot of co-op Dying Light on the weekend and a few more levels of co-op Black Ops 3 on its “Realistic” difficulty level, but these starkly contrasted with a couple hours of the luridly colourful Plants vs. Zombies: Garden Warfare 2 beta last night, the simplistic meta-RPG of the Knight of Pen & Paper 2: Here Be Dragons expansion and playing through the simply fantastic Danganronpa: Trigger Happy Havoc for the first time. I’ve got one more case to go in that game before I move on to the sequel, but it’s been sublime all the way through.

Aran’s made some good headway with his career in Football Manager. He’s still sticking with Southampton, and with four seasons under his belt, he’s competing for places in Europe, with high profile signings of André Schürrle, Canales and Jay Rodriguez starring in his team. When he’s not been managing footballers, he’s also been reviewing the somewhat uninspiring Hardware: Rivals, and is about to delve into Fallout 4.

Sticking with major RPGs from last year, Jim’s continued with The Witcher 3 taking up most of his leisurely gaming time. However, he also played through the quite wonderful The Banner Saga as it came to console for the first time, stuck Power Hover on his iPad and has returned to Destiny for the first time in six months, finding it to be just as polished a shooter as ever.

Dom’s been plugging away at Pokémon Super Mystery Dungeon on 3DS for his preview from earlier this week, as well as a bit of Code of Princess, which he says “definitely isn’t Guardian Heroes but is pretty fun.” He’s also been making his way through Rise of the Tomb Raider on Xbox One, and is really enjoying it, despite borrowing one too many of the action film tropes from the Uncharted series.

Last, but by no means least, we come to Tuffcub. He’s been thoroughly enjoying his time with Life Is Strange, even if he feels like he’s late to the party on this one, while he finished off Nihilumbra on PS Vita. He also hopped into Hardware: Rivals to help with Aran’s review, as well as hopping back into Destiny to help a friend. However, he’s feeling a little more cynical about it than Jim:

I noted that some chums had got up to about 314, I’m on 307 but I honestly don’t see any point grinding away those last few light levels when the next expansion (or game) will let me zoom past 320 in a matter of minutes. Why put in tens or hundreds of hours now?

So how about you? What have you been playing this past week?

  1. More Borderlands Pre-Sequel with Forrest and Pixel.
More Rayman Legends, probably about another 10 weeks to go for the last trophy.
Lots of Terraria, just for fun.
Some Diablo 3, to check out the new content.
A few hours of Guitar Hero Live.
Finally got someone to help with the 3 hours of co-op in Gat Out of Hell, so I now have the platinum.

    • Congrats on the plat ;)

    • Agreed, congrats on the plat! I could have helped out with that if I’d have known though, as I still have that on my to-do list for GoH (not that I have played it in a while of course…).

Might hopefully be around tonight if you guys are as well – Maybe around half 8 or so?

      • Yeah I’ve still got it an that to do haven’t played it in ages though,I’ll be floating about around that time.

  2. Not been at home this week, due to new flooring being laid, but got a couple of new games. AC India and Mortal Kombat X. Looking forward to giving them a spin this weekend!

  3. Finished the Can-Am connection league in Forza 6, netting myself a 25th place standing (out of 3000), and the new Ferrari 312 P DLC. Gonna slowly burn through the last touring car championship over the weekend.

Completed Gears of War’s campaign and now just keeping at it on the multiplayer to get to rank 100 and 10,000 kills. Matches have been a bit more balanced of late, so it’s acceptable enough.

Tried Zheros and that was very good for an indie game. Will try and complete that next week with the tedious BF4 campaign, and hopefully I can make a start on Deus Ex: HE and Gears of War 2.

  4. Took a break/gotten fed up of the buggy and botched port that is Shadow of Mordor and started to play Beyond 2 souls. tis a wonderful game. Taking a break at the moment from it and playing Xcom:Enemy Within.

What a wonderful and challenging game. It has that “Oh shinto!” factor when you realise that you forgot about an off screen enemy and it kills your man/woman. The plot is fairly light but i do suspect it is due to the nature of Xcom. That said, i’ve yet to capture me an alien and just trying to build my base up along with the resources. It is a rather fun game that forces you to think.

  5. Just Fallout 4. But my god some of the wastelanders need putting out of their misery! I came so close to killing one in my Sanctuary settlement the other night for an off-hand comment when I’d just given them guns, ammo and armor… if it wasn’t for the potential negative effect it might have on the story I wouldn’t have thought twice.

I’ve been advised by a friend to do the minutemen missions but I just don’t think I can put up with the miserable wastes of space and resources any more!

  6. Currently have two weeks off work at the moment but i’m also coming down with the lurgy. Also managed to pull something in my back and damage a tendon in my foot so my holiday is off to a fantastic start.

On top of that I haven’t managed much gaming, just a few hours of Ys: Memories of Celcetta and some Yoshi’s Woolly World. Also played Game of Thrones Risk that I had for Xmas.

    Must try harder next week.

  7. Not a lot again this week but i tried out a bit of Driveclub Bikes, definitely different to the cars but i’m enjoying it and it’s provided me with an excuse to get play around with photomode again.
Also Treasures of Montezuma (3?), a fine match-3 game which is perfect to dip into when i don’t have much time to play.

  8. As R1M mentioned the usual Borderlands, picked up the Back to the Future plat Sunday i think it was, played the four episodes of Minecraft story mode a little Destiny and Star Wars, mostly Mad Max for me after restarting due to a glitch and dowloaded the PvZ2 beta but not tried it yet, thats it for me i believe ;)

  9. This week I’ve mostly been catching up with Masterchef Professionals which I recorded before xmas – please no spoilers!

Game wise still Witcher 3 and an hour on PvZGW2 beta. Initial view is that it is more of the same (not a bad thing) if a little more frenetic. Will give it a good go over the weekend though.

  10. Talking about being late to the party, I finally played through The Last of Us. At first, the beginning got me on the wrong foot, as I expected some lighter entertainment from Naughty Dog. Then I really got into it and loved it a lot. The development of the relationship of the two main characters is brilliant.
But then, I got to the end, and again, I have to ask myself, whether it is just me who always gets the messed-up endings? Here, I presume there is only one. So, I walk away from the main storyline with mixed feelings, especially due to the amount of unnecessary violence at the end.

    • Just the one ending in TLOU, fella. :)

      • Yeah, thanks, I was just searching for some info on it. But I’m surprised this ending hadn’t been discussed more back then.
