Last we really heard of Hellblade, Ninja Theory were calling it a day with their early prototype and proof of concept work and heading into full production. Now they’re back out in the open and showing off a gorgeous new trailer for what has been renamed Hellblade: Senua’s Sacrifice.
One neat trick is that the voices in the video – a manifestation of Senua’s mental issues and psychosis – have been recorded binaurally, which means that even if you just stick a pair of normal headphones on, you should be treated to 3D sound.
You might also notice that Senua, our Celtic warrior protagonist, looks a bit different, with new technologies being used that let the actress work in real time within the game world, thanks to the power of modern hardware and Unreal Engine 4 in combination with 3Lateral’s facial technology and Cubic Motion’s live facial capture tech.
In other words, the above trailer was rendered and recorded in real time alongside the performance.
If you want to keep tabs on Hellblade’s development – you would have seen these technologies coming together over the last few months if you had been – check out the game’s series of videos on YouTube.
