UK Charts 25/04/16: Ratchet & Clank Are Number One

Well this makes me – and no doubt Sony – very happy indeed, as the rebooted/remixed PlayStation 4 début for Ratchet & Clank has stormed in at the top of the charts on the week of release. The record for week one sales for the franchise was held by 2009’s Ratchet & Clank: A Crack in Time, but the new game has sold three times the amount.

Dark Souls III has dropped a place and Star Wars: Battlefront has a massive sales boost of 177% due to the release of The Force Awakes on blu-ray.

It’s a busy week for the rest of the charts as well, is Nintendo’s Star Fox Zero lands at number six,  Alternative’s Rugby Challenge 3 grabs thirteenth spot, and Konami’s UEFA Euro 2016 Pro Evolution Soccer falls outside the top twenty.

  1. It’s good to see there’s life in the old mascot platformer genre still!

  2. Pleasantly surprised to see Ratchet up there in first.

  3. I need to whittle through some more of my backlog first but i’m looking forward to it.

  4. Absolutely shocked. Wasn’t even expecting the game to chart at all.
Not hating on the game whatsoever (it looks great) but I didn’t think there was a market for a game like this anymore outside of the £10 indie game scene.

  5. I’m certainly enjoying it. Bought it off PS store too. Was a good idea selling at £30. Think that’ll persuaded a lot of people to buy it. Plus of course there is a huge gap in the market for these kind of games. Remember in the Megadrive days practically every game was a platformer.

  6. Glad to see Ratchet & Clank at number one, where they belong.

I Completed the game last night and it was… good. Great even. I think newcomers will absolutely love it but as a long-time fan of the series, I was a tiny bit disappointed.

Every good thing you’ve read about this game is true – it’s stunning, colourful, fun, nostalgic, plays flawlessly etc etc. My issues are mainly with the amount of content that was cut from the original game.

The original was a huge galaxy-spanning adventure but I didn’t feel the same sense of scale in the remake. It feels more like a montage of the best bits than a game in it’s own right. I think this was intentional – an introduction to the series to serve as a tie-in with the movie – but after such a long wait, I really was hoping for more.

I was disappointed that so many locations from the original were cut (Eudora, Umbris, Orxon, Hoven, Oltanis). And so many weapons were not included (Tesla Claw, Walloper, Visi-bomb, Suck Cannon). I understand that they had to make cuts for the movie but I was hoping for a more faithful remake for the game.

I also hoped they would make use of the original loading screens showing Ratchet’s ship flying through space toward a new planet (something I missed in the later games) but they decided to use static screens with tid-bits of information instead.

It’s a brilliant game, don’t get me wrong, I just wish there was more of it. Hopefully the next game will be a full-scale adventure like the original games (and A Crack In Time).

One thing I did enjoy was the ability to change the appearance of the bolts (into Orbs/Gems/Rings/Coins) in challenge mode. It seems like a small change but I made a second playthough more interesting.

Going to see the movie with my Nephew on Friday and I can’t wait. Hope we don’t have to wait too long for the next game.

  7. A fully deserved No. 1 debut, brilliant job by Insomniac on what plays and looks like a brand new game rather than a reboot or remix. Everything feels crisp and fresh, I don’t even recognise some of the planets that I’ve visited from the previous gen game. It has been truly PS4’d!
Captain Quark always makes me laugh and none of the humour has been lost with this iteration in the series. An easily deserved 10/10 score in your review Tuff ;)

    Cracking stuff!
