Kratos Almost Went To Egypt, And Now Favours Rainbow Swirl Leggings

A roundtable discussion about God of War at E3 has revealed that Santa Monica Studio considered sending Kratos off to Egypt to give their gods a bit of a smack.

“Egyptian mythology was the other one and half the team was way into that,” explained creative director Cory Barlog. “All of them had great reasons. I think, for me, as I looked at both of those, Egyptian mythology is about the pharaohs as embodiments of the gods on earth and there’s a lot more about civilisation – it’s less isolated, less barren. I think at this time, we really wanted to focus on Kratos. Having too much around distracts from that central theme of a stranger in a strange land.”

Whilst the new game has a distinct viking flavour, you won’t be meeting any horn-hatted pillagers.

“We are parsing it as the time in which the vikings spoke of their gods walking the earth. So it’s not in the era where the vikings are around, we’re predating them by a considerable amount of time,” said Cory.

Cory also mentions the possibility of going to Egypt, and explains more about the game in the video below. It also includes Christopher Judge, who is the new voice and motion capture artist for Kratos, wearing some truly spectacular legwear.

  1. Got to be honest, was very surprised by the lack of love for the new direction. I thought that trailer/gameplay looked fantastic. You could only listen to angry Kratos for so long. He was brilliant but let’s see him in a different light now please.

    • Couldn’t agree more, the old format served the franchise well for long enough but things have moved on and it’s time to try a fresh approach.

    • As someone who’s never been that interested in the old God of War, I’m genuinely interested in getting this game. It’s got a depth and freshness I’d love to invest in. I think the different approach could likely get others who weren’t previously interested involved as well.

  2. Christopher Judge is wearing my golf trousers!

    • They look like a Care Bear threw-up on them.

  3. I’m really interested in this, in fact it’s the only thing from Sony’s conference that I’m interested in! Norse mythology is cool, but Egypt would have been amazing. Seems like it would have been a natural progression from the previous games. Nevermind. Hopefully next Assassin’s Creed is set in Egypt.

  4. Some more tidbits of info… it’ll have crafting resources, armor, rpg system to be discussed later. Plus this from IGN…
“While the E3 demo was a quieter, more character-driven look at the game, Barlog assured me that the series isn’t shrugging off its bombastic, cinematic roots. The reason they didn’t focus the E3 demo on a huge, spectacle-filled set piece is that it’s a given that the game will have those. Barlog and Sony Santa Monica have mastered those moments, so with this demo, they wanted to surprise fans and non-fans of the series with the unexpected.”

    • Whilst I was happy to see a new side of God of War in the E3 demo, that latter quote does fill me with glee. Thanks for sharing.
