Tencent Purchases Majority Stake In Supercell, Deal Worth $10.2 Billion

The Chinese company Tencent has announced that it is buying the majority share in Supercell, the studio behind the popular mobile title Clash Of Clans. The deal is reported to be worth $10.2 billion, with 84.3% of the company’s shares coming under Tencent’s control. The money here involved here eclipses Facebook’s acquisition of Oculus, where it spent $2 billion, and Activision’s $5.9 billion purchase of King Digital Entertainment of Candy Crush Saga fame.

Tencent has stated that Supercell will retain operational autonomy, and that the current team will remain in place with the offices staying in Finland. The deal is expected to be finalised later this year.

  1. bloody hell, the money changing hands for gaming companies these days.

i remember when most games developers were bedroom coders.
now there’s billions being thrown around.

for somebody who’s been around gaming for as long as i have, i still find it staggering.

back then countries probably dreamed of making the kind of money big gaming companies do these days.

back when i started gaming, i certainly wouldn’t have believed you if you’d told me billions would be thrown around in this industry.
