Pichu, Togepi & A Few Other Second Gen Pokémon Join Pokémon Go Today

Pokémon from the Johto region that first appeared in Pokémon Gold and Silver have joined their Kanto cousins today, but it’s perhaps not quite what players were expecting from the recent data-mining efforts. Instead of all the additional 100 Pokémon appearing in one go, Niantic are going to draw out their addition over the next few months.

The first handful of new creatures include two of the most iconic of the second gen Pokémon, as Pichu, Togepi and a small selection of others join the roster. The only way to get these, however, is to hatch them from eggs. In other words, it’s pot luck and requires you to walk a a few kilometres each time.

I think that’s a bit of a shame that they won’t be found out and about, which is always the more immediate and engaging way to catch a new Pokémon, but it makes sense for Niantic to keep things a little out of reach. The real problem is that it doesn’t make the slightest bit of sense that Togepi will be gestating inside an egg as you walk, despite actually wearing its own broken egg shell. How does that make sense?

In the meantime, it sounds like a special version of Pikachu will be found skulking around your nearby landmarks, and between now and December 29th, you’ll be able to catch a small electric mouse in a Santa hat.
