Back in May it was reported that Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland was in talks to play Nathan Drake in the umpteenth re-write of the Uncharted movie. It seems like that work on the movie is going forward as Tom himself has posted a short video on Instagram of the menu screen for the Uncharted: Nathan Drake collection and the words “For research purposes”.
“The idea is to make an origin story for Nathan Drake, something we haven’t really seen since the games take place later in his life, but at the moment this is just a conversation,” said Tom back in May. “I sat down with Tom Rothman and we sort of came up with this idea, and I sat down with Shawn Levy to talk about this idea, and believe me, this is something I’m very passionate about, that I would love to do, but it just depends if it’s going to work out.”
Shawn Levy is still attached to the film as director and it is said the movie will be like the section of Uncharted 3 where you get to play as young Nathan Drake.
You know, the bit everyone hated.
The last we heard there was going to be a completely new script but no writer has been attached. The movie was originally meant to be out in 2016, then 2017, and then Sony wiped it from their release slate completely.
Of course there’s also the small matter than by 2019 Nathan Drake won’t have starred in a game for three years and the Uncharted franchise is now fronted by Chloe and Nadine. Frankly I’d rather see Claudia Black kick ass than Tom Holland.

After seeing StrikeBack season 1, always thought Richard Armitage was a stick on for Drake

I get the feeling all this on-off-on business has harmed the project and the idea of an origin story is very offputting, we didn’t need that for Indiana Jones! The games are so good and they’re pretty much movies, I’d rather they just leave them be.
