One of the more uncertain aspects of the Switch at its launch in March of last year was the manner in which Nintendo were trying to build a new online infrastructure to match the likes of Xbox Live and PlayStation Network. The full launch of the subscription service now won’t happen until September 2018, Nintendo have stated.

That’s a major delay from the original plan to launch the paid service in autumn 2017, first being pushed back to 2018 and now slated for September, and perhaps shows that Nintendo have recognised the need to make a paid online offering worthwhile and rock solid in light of the console’s popularity. The Nintendo Switch Online app is mediocre at best and effectively worthless at worst, and yet it’s meant to be the cornerstone of the service, with the vast majority of functionality hived off from the Switch itself.
When it does launch, Nintendo have previously announced that the service will cost $19.99 / €19.99 for a whole year, which is less than half the cost of PS+ or Xbox Live Gold, locking away online multiplayer behind a pay wall when it has been free up until this point. You will at least gain a “library of classic games” including Super Mario Bros. 3, Balloon Fight and Dr. Mario, in a manner similar to the Instant Games Collection and Games with Gold. However, for things like voice chat, you need to rely on the smartphone app and a mess of cables to mix different audio sources.

Ah that’s a shame, it’s saving some money in the short term but it’ll be great when the Switch starts to catch up to the online standard. I want cross-game chat! And cloud saves, they’ll be handy.

I really thought they would need to explain why all of a sudden something that’s currently free will require a monthly subscription. I thought this would come with some form of virtual console announcement.
