Surprise! The PlayStation 4’s System Software 5.50 update has leapt out of beta and into general release today. Your PS4 might even be downloading it right this very second.
The beta’s contents leaked pretty comprehensively almost as soon as it launched, before Sony then confirmed its features, but here’s a quick rundown on what’s in the update anyway:
- Custom wallpapers – Drop your image of choice into a folder called “IMAGES” on a USB stick, then apply them under Settings > Themes on your PS4.
- Play Time Management – Accessible on the PS4 via Settings > Family management, as well as through a remote website, parents can now make sure their nightmarish children aren’t playing too much Fortnite.
- Library Improvements – ‘This PS4’ section in the Library lets you just browse what’s installed on the console, and you can now browse a dedicated PlayStation Plus section featuring all of your PS+ IGC games. You can also hide those old betas and demos from the Purchased section.
- Quick Menu – Access your custom friends list directly, and use new quick controls to adjust volume and music playback from Spotify and the Media Player or USB Music Player.
- Notifications – Remove those old notifications extra quick via the Options menu in Notifications.
- Tournament improvements – Import a team logo from USB, schedule events from the tournament page, and filter between events.
- PSVR Support Icon – Can’t remember what games have PSVR support? Now a little icon will tell you. Can we get this for PS4 Pro support as well, please?
- Supersampling Mode for PS4 Pro – When playing on a 1080p screen with a PS4 Pro and enhanced game, you can now force the console to render at 2160p and supersample down, even when games do not natively do this.

Another thing that I’m fairly sure it added (but maybe it was there before and I didn’t notice). R1 and L1 take you the ends of the menu. Saves a couple of seconds getting to the library or store icons.

My 1080P tv will be pleased with the supersampling mode and being able to separate purchased from Plus content has been requested for a while so that’s a welcome addition too.
