DICE Talk Server Tick Rates For Battlefield V, After Black Ops 4 Controversy

With the news that Treyarch had slashed (and since raised) the server tick rate for Call of Duty: Black Ops 4’s launch, cutting the number of times per second the server reports player actions to each other, DICE have opened up about their own server plans for Battlefield V.

Impressively, that’s just for the full size battles with higher tick rates possible for smaller game modes.

DICE have had their own run in with tick rates and shonky netcode in the past, with the launch of Battlefield 4 plagued by poor performance and rubber-banding. It took a lot of patience from players and work from DICE before it was fixed almost a year after release with High Frequency Network Updates being added as an option to the game, and various other innovations such as tracking players closer to you at a higher rate than those further away to help streamline the size of each packet.

That 2014 update only took the game to a 30Hz, thanks to game clients then updating the server at a higher rate, but it was taken further in 2016 so that all game modes of 32 players or fewer, as these modes saw their server tick rate increased to 45Hz.
