[UPDATE] Alien: Blackout Teased, Is Kojima Involved?

20th Century Fox has trademarked Alien: Blackout in the category for video games, part of the mounting evidence that a new Alien game is on the way.

Twitter accounts @AlienBlackout and @Alien_Blackout were created in September, but that’s not all, Game Awards producer and host Geoff Keighley tweeted the image below which seems to use the ‘W’ from Weyland Yutani, the company from the Aliens movies that has the slogan “Building Better Worlds”.

So that seems to point at a reveal at The Game Awards in a few days. Now here’s where it gets interesting: Hideo Kojima recently tweeted that he was visiting 20th Century Fox and posted pictures of the Alien poster and an Facehugger egg.

The Game Awards Twitter account replied to the tweet with the same slogan Geoff Keighley tweeted, “Worlds Will Change”.

So all the evidence points to a new Alien game, and if Kojima is involved that’s going to be very interesting.  His studio is PlayStation exclusive but that might not mean the Alien game is, Kojima does a lot of other things as well as work on Death Stranding so perhaps his involvement here is minor. Of course it might just be a coincidence that The Game Awards are using to their advantage.

UPDATE: Cold Iron Studios were bought by 20th Century Fox a while back and announced they were working on a shooter in the Aliens universe for console and PC. At the time they said the game will “explore areas of the universe that fans haven’t got to experience,” so I guess we won’t be seeing Ripley.

The Cold Iron Studios website states that they have “30+ developers” so it sounds like Alien: Blackout will be quite a small game, I wouldn’t go expecting a triple A extravaganza that lasts forty hours.

  1. I hope Kojima is not involved otherwise we will wait 20 years for cut scenes and his trips with Norman reedus

    • Is it supposed to be funny?
Kojima is a master in a game development. And your toxic bulls**t won’t change that fact.

      • I laughed. Kojima is a genius and I love the MGS games. He also most likely drove Konami bonkers and now gets to spend as much time as he likes making a game that may not even exist on paper yet. Even geniuses need deadlines, and without them, Kojima may never finish DS let alone something else.

  2. Damn, still hoping for a sequel to Isolation (AKA the best Alien game ever made).

    • Also the game that blocks your progress because she cant JUMP OVER A 2ft HIGH BARRIER.

      So no, it’s not.

      • …and the hospital beds that prevented the alien from attacking you straight on and had to go through the vents to reach your position – after which you could crawl under the beds and wait for the alien to appear on the other side and you could say: I could do this all day.

But generally I agree with JR. The tension and atmosphere in the game was fantastic. I really wanted a new one.

      • I do own it but I got as far as the Alien arriving and chasing me and I reached a corridor blocked by a chair turned on it’s side and realised I couldn’t jump over it and I lost all immersion.

Never bothered to play it after that.

Humans can jump. Humans being chased by a Xenomorph that want’s to kill them can jump REALLY HIGH. The game made no sense.

        Meh.

      • It wasn’t that big a deal for me in Isolation because if the Xeno see’s you, you’re pretty much dead anyway. No amount of Mirrors edge-style gymnastics is gonna save your ass.

I suppose it would have been handy against those Michael Myers-looking maintenance droids, but it still didn’t bother me much. I think the main focus of Isolation was not being seen at all, so you don’t need to run and jump over barriers to escape.

      • It’s such a shame you couldn’t enjoy this masterpiece of a game.

There’s hundred of these simple things you usually cannot do in games, from clapping your hands to jumping over those 2 feet walls.

Why those decisions with regard to level or game design don’t bother you in all those other games is odd, especially as Alien:Isolation is more realistic in many ways.
That super power of freezing time whenever you switch weapons never broke your immersion in other games?

      • You are correct that there are hundred things you can’t do in games, but when escaping from an alien clapping your hands doesnt help. Jumping does.

I will go back and try it again this week.

      • You definitely should.

Try to imagine jumping over a railing whilst carrying a packpack filled with heavy-components, a revolver, a bolt gun, a pump action shotgun, a stun baton, a maintenance jack, a flamethrower, several pipe bombs and molotov’s etc. Having the character leaping over hurdles like a runner in the Grand National would be even less realistic. In real life, I imagine you’d just drop all your gear and leg it. But then you’d have to backtrack over and over again to retrieve your stuff.

Once you get the flamethrower it gets much easier – you don’t even need to run (unless you run out of fuel…).

      • I’m actually very tempted to go back and play it again…
Best of luck! Level 5 was sooo scary, just before you get the flamethrower…

      • Yes, it is.
Not only Alien: Isolation is the best Alien game, it also is one of the best horror games in general.

  3. Read it last night, am extremely excited, can’t eat, can’t sleep. Ok, I’m exaggerating, I’m too old for that. But only a little.

I’m desperately waiting for anything which is just half as brilliant as Alien:Isolation was. There was nothing in video games which came close over the last years, nothing I found as exciting.

Kojima maybe being involved is slightly worrying, but who knows, with a strong project management in place, they might make use of his input without killing off the project or going in too weird directions. Hope they keep true to the franchise and avoid another stupid shooter.
