Through the console’s built in news app, Nintendo have announced the 20 (well, 21) most-played games on Nintendo Switch in 2018, and there won’t be much surprise about which games have come out on top.
The stats relate to European players, and come from players who agreed to share their playtime data with Nintendo, but make for interesting reading, nonetheless. Obviously the games that were out all the way through the year benefitted, but Pokémon: Let’s Go was clearly a big time sink for many in the last few months and held 8th and 9th between the two versions, while Super Smash Bros. Ultimate will clearly have been restricted in this chart by its December release date and could only place in 18th.
Breath of the Wild, Super Mario Odyssey, Splatoon 2 and Mario Kart 8 Deluxe are nigh on essential exclusives for the system, but it wasn’t a first party title that took the top spot. That honour goes to Fortnite.

A top 21? This random length chart thing is spreading.
Does the Switch have anything new though? Most of those 21 are things that were already available elsewhere, sometimes a long time ago, or sequels. And yet it still seems to be selling well, despite that and being somewhat underpowered. And having a horrible screen.

Can level the same criticism at the top 20 paid PSN games of 2018. it’s all sequels, cross-platform, hugely popular indie game, or whatever.

The PSN list had Spider-Man, which I guess counts as a new game? And HZD?
And things like Rocket League, which for the PS4 at least counts as something original? How that was still in there after 3 years, I don’t know. But it’s not a 3 year late port.

And Fortnite’s world domination continues unabated!
