The price of PlayStation Plus to rise in select European and Asian countries

Sony are informing PlayStation Plus members in certain European and Asian countries that the cost of the service is to rise this August. At present the U.K. is not one of the regions listed. Germany, France, and other EU countries are seeing a price rise on monthly subscriptions but no move on three months or yearly subscriptions.

The price increases seems to be linked to currency fluctuations, although Sony have made no official comment so far.

Sony raised the price of PlayStation Plus in August 2017 when £10 (or local equivalent) was added to the yearly subscription fee. Since then Sony have stopped giving away PlayStation 3 and PlayStation Vita games and so far, has not replaced them with any other offers.

Last month it was announced that the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) had begun an investigation in to online gaming subscription services, specifically PlayStation Plus, Xbox Live, and Nintendo Switch Online. They state that they are “concerned about whether some of these companies’ business practices are legal.”

They are to investigate how fair the contracts are, mentioning prices rises and the reduction in the number of games given away, along with the auto renewal procedure for each service.

  1. Although I don’t live in the UK (anymore), but in one of the countries with a price increase, my PS Plus subscription is with my UK account. So I’m not currently aaffected by this. Sometimes, though, I hope Sony will not suddenly change policies and forbid foreign accounts, as it would cost me many years of a Plus games library.

  2. I’ve mentioned it on the TSA Discord chat. CDKeys website is currently selling PS+ subscriptions (year’s worth) for £32.99. Definitely pick one up! :-)
