Konami detail the TurboGrafx-16 Mini

Konami have announced the latest entry to the already swamped mini console market, a dinky version of the TurboGrafx-16, or as it was known in Japan, the PC Engine. The console did not catch on in the West despite getting coverage from the major gaming magazines of the time, I remember reading the reviews of the games and wishing I could get my hands on the console but it was really hard to find here.

The new mini console is, as you might expect, a smaller version of the original model with a bunch of built in games and a quick save function so you can pick up your game where you left off rather than having to start from the beginning. It will also support five player local co-op, but you will need to purchase an extra bit of hardware called a Multitap to use that feature.

Unlike many other mini consoles the controllers will retain their original size and the console will also support a number of different modes that let you choose how your games look, such as by replicating the scanlines on a CRT TV for that ultimate old school gaming experience.

The full list of games has yet to be revealed but we do know some of the titles, in the West the console will include:

  • R-Type and R-Type II
  • New Adventure Island
  • Ninja Spirit
  • Ys Book I & II
  • Dungeon Explorer
  • Alien Crush

However, the Japanese version switches out some of the games and has the following line up:

  • Bonk’s Adventure
  • Dracula X
  • The Kung Fu/China Warrior
  • Super Star Soldier
  • Ys Book I & II
  • Dungeon Explorer

Now here’s the slightly weird thing. The same console will be shoved in a different case depending on the market, North America gets the console above, the TurboGrafx-16 Mini, Japan will get a version of the original white PC Engine, whilst in Europe we get a mash up of both, the PC Engine Core Grafx Mini.

Unfortunately no release date or price has been released.

  1. I think I will buy a tiny telly, and a tiny telly stand, and put all my tiny consoles under it.
