Space Channel 5 VR: Kinda Funky News Flash! is grooving and moving its way onto PlayStation VR headsets later this month, coming out in North America on 25th February and in Europe and Oceania on 26th February.
Space Channel 5 is one of many cult classics that came out of the Dreamcast, created by renowned music game designer Tetsuya Mizuguchi. It starts investigative reporter Ulala as she follows up on reports that aliens are forcing humans to dance, but ends up taking down this evil plot by out-dancing them herself, all while drawing more and more viewers to her news channel and becoming a ratings hit.
This is a straight up VR remake of the Dreamcast original by Grounding Inc., but now instead of tapping buttons in a call and response between the aliens and Ulala, you’re a rookie reporter following Ulala on the job and busting real moves to her direction. Naturally you’ll want to pick up some Move Controllers to play this.
The game has several modes, including the main Story mode, an Arcade mode that’s recommended for VR beginners, Trial Dance that challenges you to beat 100 dances in a row (there’s also a calorie burning tracker in the game for the fitness angle), and a viewing mode that lets you watch the game in 3rd person.
Though it’s out this month for PSVR, it won’t be exclusive to Sony’s virtual reality platform for too long. It’s labelled as “Coming Soon” for SteamVR compatible headsets (such as Oculus Rift and HTC Vive), Viveport and Oculus Quest.
