Crytek and Saber Interactive have dropped a tech trailer for the upcoming Nintendo Switch release of Crysis Remastered, proving that yes, the Switch can run Crysis. The remaster will be out for Switch next week on 23rd July, but has been delayed for PS4, Xbox One and PC.
When it lands on Nintendo Switch, Crysis Remastered will feature high-quality textures, global illumination (SVOGI), vegetation bending, optimised dynamic light settings, dynamic resolution, gyro aiming, motion blur, bloom (light rays and sunbeams) and more.
The tech features trailer goes through these one by one, demonstrating them all running at 720p and 30fps. Not bad for a handheld console, though this is a ground-up rearchitecting of the game to run in a much more modern version of CryEngine.
The original game can still brings PCs to their knees thanks to Crytek having gambled on future gaming PCs having higher and higher clock speeds instead of recognising the advent of multi-core consoles and PCs. Later game engines adapted to this, but it’s left the original game unable to take advantage of the power of modern CPUs.
Crysis Remastered seeks to rectify this, with Crytek working with World War Z studio Saber Interactive to overhaul the game and take advantage of more modern graphics techniques.
The game was due to be released on all platforms this month, but Crytek abruptly changed course after the leak of a trailer and screenshots received a negative reaction from fans. It was too late to delay the Switch version, where pre-orders had already gone live, but the other platforms were pushed back to allow for more time to polish and improve the product.
As they said at the time:
The features you’re looking forward to are already set, but we want to take the time on polishing the game. You might be aware of the leak yesterday, and we want you to know: we’ve seen all the reactions — the good and the bad — and we’re listening! We’re still working on a number of things in game, as well as the storefront. Please keep the love coming, and rest assure, you’ll have the game you love shortly!
This extra time until release will allow us to get Crysis Remastered up to the PC- and console-breaking standard you’ve come to expect from Crysis games. We hope you understand what we’re up to — and that you stay with us while we take the time to make a few more improvements. Stay tuned, and we’ll have that game, in your hands as soon as we possibly can.
