Scavengers PvPvE goes into PC Early Access today

Midwinter Entertainment and Improbable have announced that their ambitious PvPvE shooter Scavengers is now in Early Access, opening the game up to more players than ever before.

Anyone that has taken part in any of the Closed Beta and previous playtests will immediately have access, but new players will initially have some hoops to jump through. Instead of letting people buy in or download freely, Improbable has partnered with Twitch to dole out game keys for those watching a stream of the game – it’s a set up that has previously been used for games like Ubisoft battle royale Hyper Scape.

Here’s what you need to do:

  • Creating an Improbable game account and linking it with their Twitch account
  • Watching 30 minutes of any Scavengers stream
  • After you have claimed your Twitch Drop, you’ll receive an email with the Scavengers Steam Key and you can start playing.

Thankfully, they promise that the Early Access will open for all PC players in the near future, building up to the full release laster in 2021 on PC, and a console release sometime in the future.

Though the player base will still be limited by the Twitch promotion, this is still a significant step for the game. Josh Holmes, CEO and co-founder of Midwinter Entertainment said, “Going ‘always-on’ with Early Access means we can significantly expand our ability to tune the game, implement new systems, and take in more feedback from all of our players. This is a major milestone ahead of our full launch later this year.”

We went hands on with the PvPvE shooter late last year, finding an intriguing mix of gameplay ideas and inspirations – it’s thoroughly different to the battle royale that you could easily assume that it is. There’s also survival elements as human players are dropped into the frigid wastes of Earth, indiginous animals and mutated enemies (that’s the ‘E’ that you will be versus), and the goal not to be the last one standing, but simply to have the most resources captured as you get out alive.

In our hands on Scavengers preview, I wrote:

There’s real potential here. The comparisons to certain other games will be inevitable, but Scavengers is looking to carve out its own niche genre, with PvEvP battles for resources and survival.
