The promotional campaign for PS5 exclusive Abandoned is either the work of a genius or of someone who has no idea what they are doing, I can’t quite decide which.
Hasan Kahraman, Blue Box Games director, released a statement on 25th June stating that PS5 app which was meant to release on that day had been delayed until August. The team needed more time to work on the trailer app .Then, just a few days later on July 2nd the app was found on the PlayStation store by PlayStation Game Size, so that was rather odd.
Today, Blue Box have announced that you can pre-load the app on July 29th, but it won’t be useable until August 10th when an ‘introduction’ will be available, and then later in on in August the trailer will be available on the app.
We’re excited to announce that the Abandoned Trailers App will be available to preload free of charge for all PS5 users on July 29 with the introduction available on August 10 followed by the first trailer later in August.

That is, quite frankly, nuts. Who pre-loads a trailer? What even is an trailer app? Some sort of real time demo of the engine we guess, but why would a small indie studio go to the expensive of making something so complicated when a YouTube trailer is standard for even the biggest games in the world? And why on earth do you need an introduction to a trailer? The mind boggles.
The shenanigans have sent conspiracy theorist wild with suggestions that Blue Box, a studio that basically appeared out nowhere and managed to bag tonnes of promotion from Sony, is actually a cover for Hideo Kojima’s new version of Silent Hill. Blue box have categorically denied this.
We wanted to set things straight. We have no relations with Konami. Silent Hill is owned by Konami. We do not have any relations with Hideo Kojima. It was never our intention to tease the name as Silent Hill. We sincerely apologize for this.

Whatever Abandoned turns out to be, we’ll find out in August. It’s hard to say whether it will feature at an upcoming State of Play event though Sony is surely due for another broadcast in the near future.
As for Silent Hill, the rumour mill hasn’t stopped spinning. It was revealed earlier this week that Konami have entered a strategic partnership with Bloober Team who will likely be working on the next game in the series. Bloober Team have aligned themselves as a horror focused studio, having developed Layers of Fear, The Medium, Layers of Fear 2, and Blair Witch.

Kind of disappointed there wasn’t a trailer for the announcement that you can pre-load the app.
