With Psychonauts 2 just over a month away from release, Double Fine and Microsoft have confirmed some of the details and specifications of the game and how it will run across its various launch platforms. In particular, Xbox Series X|S consoles get 60fps with 120Hz options, and exclusive support for HDR, but what about PlayStation players? Do they get the short end of the stick?
Here are the various resolutions, frame rates, and other possibilities across the launch platforms:
|Platform||Max Resolution||Max Framerate||HDR?||Variable Refresh Rate?||Notes|
|Xbox One||1920 x 1080||30||No||No|
|Xbox One X||3840 x 2160||30||No||No|
|Xbox Series S||2880 x 1620||60, 120*||Yes||Yes||*1080p at 120Hz|
|Xbox Series X||3840 x 2160||60, 120**||Yes||Yes||**1440p at 120Hz|
|PS4 Base||1920 x 1080||30||No||No|
|PS4 Pro||2560 x 1440||30||No||No|
|PS5***||2560 x 1440||60||No||No||***PS4 package running via backwards compatibility|
it is, frankly, an awkward and muddy situation, thanks to Double Fine starting development as an independent studio and securing initial funding via crowdsourcing. At the time, they confirmed the game for PlayStation 4, Xbox One and PC, and when Double Fine was acquired by Microsoft in 2019, it was confirmed that they would honour those platforms. However, as the game was delayed further and further, Microsoft could secure themselves an additional perk: next-gen exclusivity.
So, Xbox Series X|S will have a native version of the game, while PlayStation 5 will run the PlayStation 4 version of the game via backward compatibility. Bizarrely, it means that the Xbox Series S runs the game at a higher resolution (2880×1620) than PlayStation 5 (2560×1440) which is stuck at PlayStation 4 Pro levels! However, thanks to the possibilities offered by the current development tools, Double Fine are at least letting the PS5 run the game at 60fps with a PS5-aware graphics profile for the game.
I’m sure that some PS5 owners will be a bit miffed at this, but personally, it’s far from the end of the world to be playing at 1440p. The game is a great experience from what I’ve seen while playing the opening few hours, and the stylised graphics should make absolute resolution be of lesser importance.
In our Psychonauts 2 preview, I wrote:
“Psychonauts 2 is shaping up to be a worthy sequel to Double Fine’s cult classic original. Many of the fundamentals of that game remain, but there’s a new high-stakes mission for the Psychonauts to undertake (and for Raz to save the day as the kid hero of the story), and it’s being brought together with visuals and refined gameplay that you’d hope for 15 years and 3 generations later.”
Psychonauts 2 will be out on 25th August for Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PlayStation 4 and PC, with Mac and Linux versions due out sometime after that date. The game will obviously be coming to Xbox Game Pass on day one.
