GTA 5 PS5 and Xbox Series X|S pricing confirmed – pre-loads and character migration detailed

GTA V

The PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S versions of GTA 5 and GTA Online are now up for pre-order and pre-load, as Rockstar gears up for the game’s new generation release on 15th March. There’s no free upgrades, but there are steep discounts on the game, especially for PlayStation 5 owners, who get GTA Online for free for the first 3 months and can snag the single player for under $10.

The game pre-load is only available to those who pre-order the game on either platform. With GTA Online free on PS5, Rockstar have decided to discount the Story Mode pre-order so that it’s £8.75 / 49.99 on the PlayStation Store. Meanwhile, on Xbox Series X|S, you can either buy GTA Online on its own for £8.99 / $9.99, or a bundle that includes both Story mode and GTA Online for £17.49 / $19.99.

Again, there’s no free upgrades, and these discounts are not dependent on already owning the Xbox One or PlayStation 4 versions of the game. However, if you do own that and have save files and characters that you would like to transfer, then you can do so now.

To do so, you need an up-to-date install of the game on the last generation. Load up the game and you can start transferring progress by uploading a save of your choice to the Rockstar Games Social Club, which can be found under the ‘Game’ tab of the pause menu. Only one game save can be stored per platform, and you have to then download to the next-gen release within 90 days.

You also need a Rockstar Games Social Club account to transfer GTA Online character progress, though this is already saved online for you. When logging in for the first time after 15th March, you can migrate across any GTA Online character, progression, stats, vehicles, properties, weapons, clothing, jobs, and in-game GTA$. Those wanting to make a fresh start can do so with the new onboarding and career builder.

Announced at the PS5 game showcase in the middle of 2020, GTA V was expected to release in 2021 for the new generation. GTA V has been enhanced for the new generation consoles with graphics modes that go up to 4k and 60fps, longer draw distances, texture upgrades, HDR support and ray tracing options. There’s also faster loading times, 3D audio and things like haptic feedback on the DualSense controller.

Though it still rakes in money for Rockstar, you might be totally done with GTA 5 by this point, so you’ll probably be very glad to hear that Rockstar has confirmed GTA 6 is in “active development”.

  1. Are you sure about your info? 49,99€ on PS5 and 19,99€ on Xbox Series X? I’m not so sure, there is no option at 19,99 on the Xbox Store. But the preorder is available at 49,99 for Xbox Series X…

    • We couldn’t see it on the Microsoft Store via a web browser, but searching the store through an Xbox Series X and the ‘coming soon’ section reveals the launch discounts.
