The Game Rating and Administration Committee of Korea, who give two figs about embargoes and leaking games, are at it again. Their latest listings reveal that four old Syphon Filter games have been rated for PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 5. Sorry chaps, no Syphon Filter PS5 game as yet.
The games are Syphon Filter (1999), Syphon Filter 2 (2000), Syphon Filter: Dark Mirror (2006), and Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow (2007). Obviously you can’t play those games on PlayStation 4 or 5 so it’s almost certain that they have been rated for release on PlayStation Plus Premium, which launches this June.
It’s been a good while since Syphon Filter graced PlayStation although Jeff Ross, former director at Sony Bend, has revealed that Sony did pitch a reboot to Bend but it was turned down.
“They asked us, ‘what about a Syphon Filter remake’?”, he said in January 2022. “They asked us if there were any other IPs that we have that we can use, and the only other one that we have is Syphon Filter. But honestly, I had zero ideas on how to reboot Syphon Filter so I wasn’t interested in that at all.”
The last game in the series, Syphon Filter: Logan’s Shadow, was released on PS2 and PSP way back in 2007 and was developed by…. Sony Bend. A trademark for the game was registered in 2017 suggesting Sony were not done with the franchise but nothing came of it. The wait goes on for a Syphon Filter PS5 game.
