Nintendo Switch Sports update adds more Leg Strap support, new Volleyball moves & more next week

Nintendo has announced that a free Nintendo Switch Sports update will release next week on 27th July, adding broader support for the Leg Strap within the football game modes, new volleyball moves, and Friend Matches.

The game update will be released on 27th July at 2AM BST UK time – that’s 26th July 6 PM PDT and 9PM EDT in North America – and will be a free update to the game.

Once updated, the biggest new addition will be the ability to use the leg strap accessory to attach a Joy-Con to your leg for 1v1 and 4v4 matches. At launch, the leg strap was only usable for the goal scoring mini-game that was a fun little aside to the game. You’ll be able to use the same physical kicking motions in full matches now, as well as making a jogging motion in place to dash in game. There’s a bonus to playing like this as your in-game kicks will be more powerful!

The update also adds new Volleyball moves to try out. The Slide Attack and Rocket Serve will help make your play less predictable to hopefully break through some staunch defensive play on the other side of the net.

Finally, Nintendo has boosted the in-game rankings. If you play in the Pro League online, you can now shoot for the new S Rank and ∞ Rank. You can also now play with your friends using Room IDs to join lobbies together.

There’s more yet to come to Switch Sports, with an autumn update coming that will add golf as a new sport to play.

A revival of the classic Wii Sports series for the Nintendo Switch, Nintendo Switch Sports launched back in April bringing a mixture of both new and returning sports. However, was it enough? In our Nintendo Switch Sports review, Jason said:

“Nintendo Switch Sports is a fun reminder of the Wii Sports craze, bringing back some classic sports and adding some new ones that make use of the Joy-Con and motion controls in more advanced ways. It’s all just a bit shallow, though, and difficult to wholeheartedly recommend unless you expect to play online a lot or constantly break it out for local head-to-head battles.”
