What We Played #580 – The Callisto Protocol & Vampire Survivors

Vampire Survivors Header

It was quite a late one last night for anyone staying up to watch The Game Awards, Sure, they promised that it would be shorter than the last few shows, but I don’t think it felt like that! Did any trailers stand out for you?

Before I was massively sleep deprived, I had a few games on the go this past week. I’ve been dabbling with Halo Infinite once more, rejoined the Gran Turismo 7 gang for some BTCC-styled races, and had my daily go-to of Really Bad Chess on mobile, but the game that really captured my imagination this past week has been Vampire Survivors. It’s really good, a fun single-stick shooter roguelite that more people on PC, Xbox and now mobile should check out. I’m looking forward to the DLC next week!

Let’s kick things off with Gamoc, who’s continued on with Modern Warfare 2 multiplayer, blending that with an eclectic mix of Beat Saber, Chorus and The Witcher 3. He also dipped into Earth Defence Force: Iron Rain and series spin off World Brother – “The former is OK, the latter is… Kinda better despite being a voxelly version of EDF.”

From one CDPR game to another, Aran has continued on with Cyberpunk 2077, and continued the playstyle that got him through Horizon Forbidden West. He’s just clearing side missions and crimes, totally ignoring the main storyline as he does so.

Marvel's Midnight Suns Spider-Man

Nick P is nearing the end of God of War: Ragnarok, and continuing a second run through Midnight Suns, “because it’s GREAT”. Alongside those, it’s been his usual Modern Warfare 2, Overwatch and Dead by Daylight. Oh, and he had a birthday! Happy birthday!

Nic B has mainly played Pokémon Go and Marvel Snap, because of course he has, but Tuffcub has not been playing Destiny 2. In fact, he’s not really been playing anything because he was off on holiday and then flying back to the UK. I bet the sub-zero temperatures were a bit of a shock to the system!

The Callisto Protocol Shoot Tentacles

And finally for today, Steve made his way through to the end of The Callisto Protocol, “which is whelming (neither under or over).” While he credits the looks and sounds, the combat didn’t gel for him and became far too repetitive and janky feeling. “Without the hype it would have been received as a good new sci-fi horror but a victim of too much expectation – and a pants PC port.”

Now then, what have you been playing?

  1. Upgrading my hardware continued, as I got around fitting a Black Friday 2TB drive into my PS5, at least something which was straightforward and a matter of 5 minutes.

Then I played AC Valhalla, as it’ll leave Plus soon, and I felt like trying it before then. My expectations were quite low, based on my previous experiences with Assassins Creed games. It’s surprisingly fun, though, looking for hidden treasures, etc., but as usual for AC games, the story is really weak so far. Thankfully, those immersion-breaking sequences in present time were quite rare until now. It’s a shame there’s no option to switch these off.

The Game Awards I completely forgot last night, but going through the news this morning made me feel I’ve not missed anything overly interesting.
