When it was revealed that Amazon had picked up Tomb Raider for games, movies, and TV series we had a little chat on the TSA Slack and figured that Embracer had probably negotiated a good deal. If a new report is to believed they negotiated an amazing deal and Square Enix will be kicking themselves.
You may recall that Square Enix sold the rights to Tomb Raider, development teams Crystal Dynamics, Eidos-Montréal, Square Enix Montréal, and a catalogue of IPs including Deus Ex, Thief, Legacy of Kain, and more than 50 other back-catalogue games for $300 million.
According to a report on fellowshipoffans.com Amazon paid around $600 million to lease Lara Croft and the Tomb Raider franchise. You don’t have to be a maths genius to work out that is double what they paid for all of the studios and IPs, and it is only a lease, Lara and Tomb Raider are still owned by Embracer.
Fleabag’s Phoebe Waller-Bridge is writing the scripts for the Tomb Raider TV show as part of a multi million deal with Amazon, but it is reported that she has no plans to feature in the show. She will also be an executive producer on the shower along with Dmitri M. Johnson.
It is also reported that there will be a new Tomb Raider movie and this will be connected to the TV show. Amazon picked up the rights to publish the next Tomb Raider game back in December 2022 and it will be a single-player, narrative-driven adventure.
The report also suggests that Warner Bros will be losing the Middle-Earth license and it will be reverting back to Middle-earth Enterprises who are owned by… you guessed it, Embracer.
Has anyone got some spares shares in Embracer they don’t need? I could give them a very good home.
