PS5 passes 40 million console sales just slightly slower than the PS4

The PlayStation 5 has passed another milestone, with more than 40 million consoles now sold by Sony since its launch in late 2020.

That’s just a little bit slower than the PS4, which pulled off the same feat two months sooner, but didn’t have to deal with anywhere near the same difficulties through component shortages that endured through the first years of COVID-19.

Jim Ryan in the announcement post, “We launched PlayStation 5 in November 2020 and the world was in a strange and different place than when we announced the console in 2019. Despite the unprecedented challenges of COVID, our teams and our partners worked diligently to deliver PS5 on time. We continued to face headwinds with the pandemic, and it took months for supply chains to normalize so we could have the inventory to keep up with demand. For more months than I care to remember, we kept thanking our community for their patience while working through these issues. But now PS5 supply is well-stocked and we are seeing that pent up demand finally being met.”

Now that the PS5 is readily available for sale, Sony has been able to more easily meet demand for the current generation console. They announced that the PS5 had hit 32 million sales back in February, and so has been able to sell a further 8 million in the first half of this year alone – the latest statistics are true, as of 17th July 2023.

This could end up being a huge year for the PS5, as follow up with the recent launches of Final Fantasy XVI, Diablo IV and Street Fighter 6 with the first party blockbuster Spider-Man 2 in October.

There’s no word on how PSVR 2 is selling, though, which will keep the pressure off the burgeoning new generation of VR headset as it find its audience (and you need to have a PS5 to use it, after all), but also isn’t necessarily good news if we’re hoping that VR can gain an even more mainstream reach.
