Larian has announced that Baldur’s Gate 3 Patch 3 will release later today, Friday 22nd September, with another sweeping set of bug fixes and tweaks, and one big new feature: a Magic Mirror for appearance changes. Oh, and the game now supports Mac too!

Update: The patch notes have now been released alongside the update, and this post has been changed to reflect that.

Having been delayed to go through more certification, once Patch 3 is installed, a Magic Mirror will now live in your camp, letting you change your Tav’s appearance pretty much whenever you like. This will allow you to change up your appearance, switch voices and select a different pronoun, but you won’t be able to change race or body type, and you can’t change your character’s Origins.

That’s great to have added into the game, and will help if you’ve come to dislike how your character looks. However, there’s reams and reams and reams of other updates and improvements within the voluminous patch notes. You can read them here (beware there are specific details that are spoilery), but the biggest things for players in Act 3 is performance improvements.

Larian has made optimisations to that Quality Mode will be more stable at 30 FPS, though there’s work still to be done for a steady 60 FPS mode. As part of that, there’s improved performance with dense crowds and in the Lower City, and they’ve reduced some of the load on the game by disabling distant NPCs with automated dialogues and behaviours. These should really help with Act 3 once you reach Baldur’s Gate itself, though that point with NPCs could have an impact on how lively the city feels.

Baldur’s Gate 3 is out now across PC and PS5, but Patch 3 will also herald the game’s release for MacOS. For the time being, Xbox gamers are being left out in the cold void of Starfield to get their RPG-ing fill, but Larian and Microsoft recently announced an agreement that would let the studio drop local split-screen co-op for Xbox Series S in order to ship the game on the platform. Baldur’s Gate 3 is expected to release on Xbox Series sometime in 2023.

The game is fantastic, though, and a prime example of CRPGs at their very best. In our review, Dom said, “Baldur’s Gate 3 is an exquisite example of a role-playing game, and an incredible recreation of the Dungeons & Dragons experience. It is, in a word, unmissable.”
