What We Played #649 – Rise of the Ronin, Isonzo & Immortals of Aveum

It’s Friday! And with Friday comes a look back at all the games we’ve played this last week. I’ve been hammering Unicorn Overlord, which might just be the best game of the year, while I also spent a bit of time sobbing over the Wii U and 3DS being fully put out to pasture. Beyond that there’s been a lot of Party Animals during the school holidays, and a spot of New Star GP to round things out.

Tuffcub has been playing Destiny 2. Obviously. He’s also had a look at what is coming for it, and feels pretty positive about it’s future. He was also more than pretty positive that you should be watching the new Fallout TV show, so any Amazon subscribers should check that out. He’s also played Helldivers 2 and Cult of Lamb, “which is rather fun and a bit silly.”

Fallout

Nick P has spent most of his week with Rise of the Ronin, saying “It’s just brilliant!”. Besides that, it’s been a little bit of Helldivers 2, Dead by Daylight and Street Fighter 6, with a brief trip to London to play Topspin 2K25!

It was a bit more of Dragon’s Dogma 2 for Gamoc, without his pawn going off on a murder spree this week, as well as a bit of Suicide Squad and  Immortals of Aveum from PS Plus. He wasn’t that impressed, saying, “The EA magic FPS that a dev claimed people didn’t give enough of a chance? Well I gave it enough of a chance and it’s almost universally mediocre, other than Gina Torres, who is always great and manages to be pretty engaging in what is otherwise profoundly meh. The motion capture is pretty good too though.”

Ade agreed, also saying that Immortals of Aveum on PS Plus was “painfully mediocre”, so he continued with Hi-Fi Rush instead; “which is brilliant”. He’s also started on Tales of Kenzera: ZAU for review, and you can check out his preview very soon this afternoon!

Aran played Klonoa and got bored, played Need for Speed Unbound and got bored. In an effort to not be bored he returned to Starfield and is enjoying exploring space at his own pace.He says, “I’ve surveyed a few systems now including the Solar System. Next step is to upgrade my ship.”

Continuing on his adventure through the Fallout-adjacent STALKER: Legends of the Zone Trilogy, Jim told us, “It’s incredibly grim, and definitely showing its age almost two decades after its original release, it’s been an intriguing delve into the series that has me excited for STALKER 2.” On the complete opposite of the tone spectrum, he’s been playing Disney Speedstorm on both mobile and PS5 – “I’m a sucker for kart racers and it’s been way too long since we had a Mario Kart 8 contender – Speedstorm may not be good enough to dethrone the genre’s current king but it has been a great diversion.”

Outcast A New Beginning Talan town

Steve has played through the rest of Outcast: A New Beginning saying, “It is the right length for an open-world game but the ending was a bit pants. I’m not a fan of games that throw in a completely new mechanic just for the end section – especially ones that render all your levelling up and upgrades meaningless”. Alongside that he’s back in Nibelhelm coming towards the end of FFVII Rebirth. He says, “I’m getting a little tired of the constant busy work and distractions so glad to have been playing it alongside other games. Chadley and Mai can f*@! right off.”

Miguel has crammed a lot in, playing Helldivers 2, Yellow Taxi Goes Vroom, Besiege, and Marvel Ultimate Alliance 3! Plus a pinch of Dragon’s Dogma 2.

And finally, Tef has juggled a little smidgeon of Helldivers 2, some WW1 alpine action in Isonzo – it’s a real change of pace to the Battlefield series, but has made some concessions to playability compared to Verdun or Tannenberg, and there’s a new game mode for the next couple of weeks – shared a quick preview of Bellwright, and tried to keep a cat from eating a bouquet of flowers…

What about you? What have you played?

  1. In Elden Ring I defeated the Fire Giant and have moved on to Farum Azula, where i also defeated the Godskin Duo . Only a few bosses to go now..

And i’ve also been enjoying Rad Rodgers and 50 Seconds which i grabbed on sale for some relaxing breaks from Elden Ring.

  2. Continued playing through beautiful Ghost of Tsushima, the missions have enough variation so far to keep me going.
I also tried F1 with Plus, but that’s not so much my game. My son loves it, though.
