UK Chart: Best Selling Games Of 2011

UKIE has released the chart  for the best selling games of 2011 in the UK, though no sales figures have been released.

Modern Warfare 3 took the number one spot for most amount of games sold across all platforms, while FIFA 12 was 2nd and Battlefield 3 took 3rd place.The full chart is below.

  9. Saints Row: The Third
  10. Batman: Arkham City

The best selling games for individual platforms were also revealed. Modern Warfare 3 was the top seller for both Xbox 360 and PS3. On the Wii, Zumba Fitness took the number one spot. Football Manager 2012 was top of the table in the PC list.

When it came to handhelds  Super Mario Land 3D was the highest selling software on the 3DS, FIFA 12 was top on PSP and  Professor Layton and The Spectre’s Call was number one on the DS.

Jo Twist, UKIE CEO, released a statement about the sales chart.

“In a year when overall consumer spending was down, the launch of so many high-quality titles showed that there was still strength in the UK’s boxed-product games market.

However, whilst the boxed product market still remains a key revenue stream, digital is where much future growth lies and it is therefore vital that we understand the size of this market.

UKIE’s Digital Charts, launching this year, will be a step towards measuring digital revenues. I’d urge all games developers and publishers who want to get involved in creating these charts to join UKIE’s digital group.”

It will be interesting to see how the digital chart will compare alongside the traditional chart when it launches this year.

    • Indeed. It seems Zumba didn’t need to do much to hang on to it’s top spot for as long as it did. But still impressive.

    • Yeah. where the hell did Portal 2 go? It had all bloody year, AND was fantastic!

  2. I can’t believe Just Dance was number 4. That’s both hilarious and desperately depressing!

    • Just Dance was number 6, which is bad enough. Zumba at 4, worse.

      • Have you not played Just Dance 3? just saying…there is a reason why it’s number 6.

    I have them all except Zumba and Just Dance.

  4. Whilst I don’t want to start a fanboy war, I do find it amusing since EA talked a lot of crap about beating MW3. BF3 is an amazing game, and is undoubtably more impressive than MW3, but as far as sales are concerned, it serves them right for bigging themselves up! Still, 2nd and 3rd is good! :p

    • I guess it was one of those instances where they have to be as behind their product as much as they can be and while they had to realistically have known that they wouldn’t beat MW3 on sales, getting as close as they have done is a hell of an achievement.
      Now, if they can build on it with the upcoming MoH, they should be closer than ever.

      As for fanboys, I wholly fail to fathom the thinking behind any of the over-rated bile that spews forth from their over-used mouths because instead of incessantly whining about sand in their vagina or whose cereal-box game is better or whatever, they should just be thankful that we have such a truly stunning array of games and consoles to choose from.
      Courtesy of some of the brightest minds in the industry, particularly following a year so successful as 2011.
      There’s almost too many great products hitting the shelves as I have neither the time nor the money to satisfy my interest in everything that’s out there.

      • Not at all you make a great point.

        I love MW, and only really defend it when it gets a lot of hate. Millions can’t be wrong. I’m also blessed with the stunning BF3 too when I fancy a change of pace. It’s a win-win for me! I think BF4 will surpass MW, as FIFA eventually did with Pro Evo.

      • I’m stubborn, I still play PES. :D

        I might have to switch to FIFA now though because PES is region locked for some reason which is beyond me so I can’t play with my brother since moving to the US. Either that or import PES.

      • The new FIFA is great with the new defending system. Requires a bit of patience at first though! I used to be a Pro Evo man until I couldn’t get the dodgy save files – it’s just not the same without the licences/kits/names etc

      • i doubt for a moment ea actually though that they would be mw3 in regards to sales, just to take a big chunk out of the market share and get gamers which only ever buy cod each year that there are other great alternatives, both of which they did with flying coulers. battlefield 3 has shifted about 10 million copy’s which is nearly 3x the sales of bc2 in the same period. also you have to remember that mw3 sales figures included pretty much every platform under the sun where as battlefield 3 was only available on the three big ones.

      • Sure, that’s why I think they may even beat it next time around, they are chipping away at it.

        Which other platforms, surely it was only the DS, which I can’t imagine sold that well?

      • I have to say that 3rd in the overall table is still a pretty damn good acheivement for BF3 when up against the behemoth that is MW.

        Also, bearing in mind that BF2 was PC only & MW series has been multiplatform for some time now just adds to the success of BF3.

        Whilst they didn’t hit the top spot & ‘beat’ MW3, i think that they should still be pretty chuffed with 3rd, considering.

      • I’m sorry but ‘millions can’t be wrong’ is the worst argument ever. Just an example, There’s millions of religious people, and atheists, all who think they’re right. Some have to be wrong. Millions can, and often are, wrong. Cod is pretty good though :P

      • I just meant, if it’s as terrible as some people say, why do so many people repeatedly buy it. If it were a new IP, millions might buy it based on hype etc and then find out its terrible. But in this case most people will have played a previous CoD so know what they’re getting. Therefore it can’t be a bad game, no matter what people think of it. It’s certainly not the greatest, it’s certainly not groundbreaking, but it is bloody enjoyable! ;)

    • Just like to point out that EA never said they beat MW3. They actually stated that they knew they wouldn’t but they wanted to eat at its market share – and with 8 million sold already, they’ve certainly done that.

      • Actually I think you are right. I just don’t see the need for that attitude or arrogance, especially when their game is clearly more impressive and apart from frame rate, probably acheived more technically. So it just amused me that they were beat, even if it was by a smaller margin than normal. As I said, I think BF will outsell CoD soon, especially if it’s a Treyarch game next. Or hopefully BF3s increased market share will give the Modern Warfare series (or the next IW game) the kick it needs. It needs to make HUGE steps and a whole new engine if it’s going to want to claw it’s share back.

  5. Not my sort of thing but what a brilliant idea Zumba has been.

    I’d have thought Batman would’ve been a bit higher but it may have lost a few sales with the few news pieces to do with the unnecessary single-use pass cutting single player elements.
    Personally, I hope it did because while online passes make sense to me whether I agree with them or not, single-use passes that affect the single-player have absolutely no place in video-games.

  6. Shocking that only 1 new IP made it into that chart. (Im not counting Zumba Fitness because its not “interlectual” *Jazz hands*).
    L.A. Noir standing alone amongst a slew of sequels and that studio has now closed its doors. Sad times.
    Kind of shows that consumers are not willing to spend money on new IPs in the current finacial climate and are more willing to spend money on games in their comfort zone i.e. sequels.

    • Hehe, nice one.

    • On the other hand every sequel once started as a new IP. You can’t expect every new IP to take the world by storm, they have to grow and producers have to iron out the mistakes of the first edition. Second editions usually do a lot better. Look at Batman, they did a great job there. Dead Space 2 also did a lot better than the first. I think a new Mirror’s Edge would sell a lot better than the first.

      Every new IP has to grow.

      And than you have the risk of IPs growing stale. I look at you MW. It still sold a lot, but if BF4 progresses again and the next CoD is once again just a superficial new layer of paint on an old chair, the downfall might begin.

  7. Would be interesting to see the actual sales figures.
    I’m surprised at how well Revelations did, considering there wasn’t that much advertising for it, and it released just a week after MW3 and Skyrim.

    • Assassin’s Creed has gained quite a following.

  10. Nice to see LA Noire so high :) a very unique game which was fantastic IMO. No surprise with the top 3. Would liked to have seen Skyrim edge in the top three though
