Ghost Recon: Future Soldier PS3 Install Is Huge

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bN9du8ndcrg

PlayFront are reporting that Ghost Recon: Future Soldier requires a massive (or as Google translate prefers, ‘proud’) install of 6.5 gig on the PS3.

I cannot find any other reference to the install but Google translate suggest this is a ‘must install’, presumably that means mandatory.

If you’re getting this for the PS3 it’s time to clear out some hard drive space. Our review of the game will land tomorrow, although we’ve reviewed it from 360 code, so can’t verify the install size.

  1. In town on Sunday and GAME were really going for it with Ghost Recon promo: http://yfrog.com/nuvi8eaj

    • how can they afford to do a promo like that at the minute?!

      • The likelihood is part or full funded by UBI

  2. 6.5GB is massive will have to delete a few of the older game installs to even play it

  3. Oh my.

Really hope that Sony learn from this gen & iron out bandwidth bottlenecks for the PS4 so that mandatory installs are thing of the past.

    • Still better than swapping DVD’s…

      • It still happened in the preceding years when games didn’t fill DVDs and disc swapping wasn’t necessary.
TBH it’s a great feature when it’s manageable, like God of War’s 1GB+ of cached data (rather than install, which was cached during an opening movie), but essentially dumping the whole game to HDD?

    • Swings and roundabouts

    • Don’t mind initial installs but 6.5Gb is a bit much, especially if you have an early PS3 with a small HHD.

  4. Those are massive and the installs pretty big to.

  5. This has to be the biggest mandatory install for the PS3 yet. :O Will probably take half an hour to install.

I feel sorry for those with 20GB PS3s as they will have to delete some stuff if they are near the limit.

    • Rage?

    • MGS4?

    • There’s a 20gig ps3?

      • I think it was released a few years ago. MGS4’s install is around 4GB i think. Not sure about RAGE.

      • Eu never got it.

    • Oh i see.

    • GT5???

    • It’s not the biggest, but installs on a whole do seem to be getting larger for some sort of games;

      Rage = 8GB (or thereabouts)
GT5 = Anywhere between 7.5GB & 10GB (depending on what you have downloaded etc i think – This one is not from experience though)
Max payne 3 = 5.5GB (this is the one that most surprised me)

So it sits quite proudly in the middle of the top few of the large install leaderboard.

  6. Sometimes It’s nice to have a 500 Gig drive. ^^

  7. boobs……

    • big hairy ones, with bits on the end!

    • only came into this story because i saw this comment on the front page.

Nice hit baiting there Mikey. Kudos!

  8. Wow that’s pretty sizable. Granted it will be a similar value on the 360 (though not compulsory of course). Still, if it improves performance then I’m all for it :)

  9. Or they could just learn to develop for PS3 properly. 6.5 in 2012 is far to large, devs have had more than enough time to develop for PS3 and not just port it over from the 360.

    • A 3rd party can’t commit the resources needed to make that happen. Doesn’t have to be a supposed 360 port to have an install; GT5, GoW, Starhawk, Heavy Rain… Any game that requires textures to be streamed in really. Not sure what Naughty Dog do differently… but if the architecture didn’t have this bottleneck 3rd parties would be able to develop without an install & keep a project on budget.

      • Mass Effect 3 doesn’t have an install, so Bioware are doing something right.

    • if the game runs better have no problem with it.

  10. Don’t think I’ve got 6.5GB free on my hard drive. Looks like I’ll need to have a cull of some of the old crap I’ve been keeping.
