PS4’s Dual Cameras Can Detect A Player’s Location Even Without Move or DualShock 4

According to details emerging from Japanese sources this morning, the PS4’s Dual Camera array will be used for more than just working out where a given DualShock 4 controller might be. Apparently, assuming correct translations, the camera block will be able to detect a user’s location in the room regardless of whether they’re holding a DualShock 4 or a Move controller.

That sounds like Kinect levels of tech.

Additionally, the PS4 also seems able to push out the Vita’s full native resolution for Remote Play titles, which should be the majority of PS4 games from launch onwards. Being able to play full PS4 titles on the Vita will be great, assuming Sony nail any lag problems – something Nintendo did well with the Wii U by dedicating a distinct Wi-fi system to doing just that.

Details are emerging on the PS4 continuously after last week’s New York reveal, and hopefully we’ll learn more as additional Japanese magazines get published.

  1. Body tracking and face recognition were in the initial spec sheets.

    • Orbis? Wasn’t it?

      • I mean the first official PS4 spec sheets. As in it’s confirmed.

  2. If I could play every, or at least most PS3 games on the Vita I would be a very happy boy.

  3. As far as my daughter is concerned it’s good to hear it tracks body… the arm waggling in dance games in comparison to Kinect is piss-poor.

  4. Sounds good. Why have you put the KZ4 trailer in this article though? I noticed this has happened on a few articles recently. Fair enough if its Killzone related, but this isn’t I don’t think.

    • I was thinking that too. The media molecule tech demo would surely have been far more relevant?

  5. It won’t be something i’ll use an awful lot but i’m definitely happy its there, much like cross game chat. I think its important that PS doesn’t lose the ‘hardcore’ gamers because its become to ‘family’ orientated. It seems we will get the best of both worlds though thankfully.

  6. Gaikai tech should really help the remote play lag.

    • Yes, I was going to say that. They said that the technology behind Gaikai is inside the PS4 in some slim form so streaming to the Vita should work really well, considering they can enable such feats across the internet with very long distances.
I’m holding on to my Vita just because of Remote Play, right now. I really hope they open it up to all (or at least almost all) games. It’s such a great feature for people like me who share the living room TV with other people.

  7. Body tracking will be a nice standard feature to have, good news, it would be nice to seem some simple mini-esque motion based games in the future. I don’t know what Kinect is like but I love the simple old EyeToy games, Kung Fu Live on the PS3 was excellent fun too. These sort of titles are good news for keeping kids placated… Until they turn on each other. Actually, the same applies for pissed adults.

  8. Hmmm, they mention tracking player location but not tracking individual limbs.. Bearing in mind the rumoured Kinect 2, i hope there’s plenty more to reveal about the PS4 camera tech.
The improved Remote Play sounds great, especially as it looks like they might be able to get most developers to tick that box this time around. Hopefully it’ll be a much slicker/near-instant startup than the current Remote Play.

  9. As excited as I am for Remote Play on the Vita, how exactly is it going to work properly? The Vita lacks four important buttons the PS4 controller has, these being L2, L3, R2 and R3. I guess they will modify the games to work with Remote Play. Even then, surely some games will need at least a few of those buttons?

    • could they potentially use the corners on the rear touch pad to replicate L2 AND R2?

      • Possibly, but I can see it being rather easy to accidentally keep hitting L2 and R2 then. Especially for those who have big hands.

      • Isn’t that the way it’s handles with PS1 classics?
While it’s not really optimal, it’s very possible. They could also map L3 and R3 to the lower corners of the touch screen while still leaving room for any touch based gestures that would be performed on the DS4 touch pad.

      • Yeah, I guess that’s what they will probably do. As you said, not optimal but certainly possible.

      • You can do something that for ps1 games like Soul Reaver -ie use the rear touch pad in place of L2 and R2 – i couldn’t figure out exactly what you’re supposed to do though – touch, swipe, tap? I gave up on it as it didn’t seem to work consistently.
However, with the new PS4 controller, Remote Play on the Vita should be a better match control-wise.

      • @TSBonyman: it’s touch, but you need to do it closer to the centre of the back.

      • @Kennykazey: Thanks, i’ll try that out next time!

    • Part of the plan is for devs to quickly implement a control scheme specifically for the Vita, yes.

tuff like on-screen buttons, rear touch pad presses… It’ll be up to the devs, but the two touch screens are nice and flexible in what can be assigned to them.

  10. Now with extra build-in code with the compliments of NSA, FBI & CIA and all others that want to have a peek in your home (^_o).

    • Rumour has it that the ps4 has a complimentary tinfoil hat included.8)
