There’s no rest for the wicked, as they say, and it seems that we’ve been especially wicked this January. The game releases are already ramping up in what’s looking like it could be a cracking year for video games. Will it top 2017? I’m not so sure, but there’s plenty to keep us all entertained.
If you’re looking for something to play this weekend, don’t forget that there’s betas for Metal Gear Survive, Monster Hunter: World and Dissidia Final Fantasy NT all running. Can’t go wrong with a bit of free gaming, can you?

This Week’s Features
I took the lead on Ones to Watch this past week, but still found the time to bring you a bunch of previews. Surprisingly, Metal Gear Survive is actually rather good. It’s not Metal Gear, but it’s an interesting spin off that’s well worth giving a look.
I followed it up with a quick guide for Survive to help people get to grips with the game, with a tutorial seeming to be completely missing from the currently running open beta. In other news, I could probably have done with a guide to Monster Hunter: World when I ventured into its third and final beta.
Those in the team that love their fighting games eagerly lapped up the Dragon Ball FighterZ beta last weekend (when it worked) and shared their thoughts on this improbably fighting game.
Dave went and visited the team behind The Lord of the Rings Living Card Game, finding a refreshingly non-randomised card game, and spoke to Fantasy Flight about its creation.
The latest Playing with History saw Ade delve into ancient Greek mythology to reveal that, as brutal and gruesome as it was, the God of War series was actually rather true to the darkness of the original fables.
Finally, What We Played featured Dragon Ball FighterZ, Monster Hunter: World and The Witcher III.

- MrYd called Telltale’s Batman series “one of their best”, then became Batman in VR, and picked up What Remains of Edith Finch in the sale.
- Steelhead isn’t sold on the attempts at humour in Valkyria Chronicles 2 and has been frustrated by the limitations of the portable game.
- It took a while, but JR. came to love Hellblade on his way to the platinum trophy, and nabbed the platinum in The Solus Project, finding it a great game even without VR.
- Getting a triple vanguard shotgun kill streak five times in Battlefront II has continued to elude ron_mcphatty.
- Andrewww also enjoyed What Remains of Edith Finch, having finally returned from his Christmas break.
- Hornet1990 returned to gaming after a dry 2017 with Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and a run through Modern Warfare Remastered.
- Crazy_Del and B_Cambo mixed playing Vikings with a few beers and whiskey this past week. Sounds like fun!
