Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection has been announced, a revival of a whole host of retro classic based on the iconic heroes in half shells. The collection will come to PS5 and PS4 in 2022.
If you thought the pizza of the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles had grown cold since its 80s heyday, then I’m sure that there’s some that will happily grab a slice and call it breakfast. The Cowabunga Collection will reheat a whole host of beat ’em ups, fighting games and even a metroidvania from the franchise’s 8-bit and 16-bit history. It’s pretty much all of the Konami games.
This includes a whopping 13 console and arcade games, including regional variants.
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (arcade)
- Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Turtles in Time (arcade)
- TMNT II: The Arcade Game (8-bit)
- TMNT III: The Manhattan Project (8-bit)
- TMNT IV: Turtles in Time (16-bit)
- The Hyperstone Heist (16-bit)
- TMNT III: Radical Rescue (Game Boy)
And plenty more besides, such as the trio of one-on-one fighting games: Tournament Fighters.
The revival is being handled by Digital Eclipse, who Konami says is perfectly suited to the project. They’ve worked to improve the games with modern emulator niceties like Rewind and Save Anytime, and there will be in-game guides that ape the style of old 80s video game mags. A far cry from having to stuff countless coins into arcade machines.
This is quite a timely collection, considering that there’s a brand new TMNT beat ’em up in development. Coming from the makers of Streets of Rage 4, dotemu, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Shredder’s Revenge is a four-player beat ’em up that will see Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello, battling across Manhattan and taking in iconic TMNT locations as the kick butt and attempt to stop Shredder. Bebop, Rocksteady, and Krang will also be on hand to cause trouble while the Turtles will have brand new abilities to help them fight the Foot Clan.
