What The PS Move Could Have Been

Most of us are happy with our Move controllers, even though a few more games would go down a treat. A recently released patent shows what the Move could have been though if Sony had followed through with its plans.  One of the main additions is a built in joystick, negating the need to buy a separate Dual Shock or Navigation Controller.

Also shown is a trackball on the base of the controller, which could be swapped with “other input devices such as a button cluster.”  The glowing orb also had much more use, sensing pressure differences that essentially turns it into another joystick.

The mind boggles at what could have been, but such a feature rich controller would have priced it out of the market.  Not to mention the house sized battery it would have taken to keep it running.  Still, we can dream though, and wonder if at the very least an in-built joystick Move will ever make its way to market.

  1. Please don’t let Sony start messing with the controller. We just need them to focus upon producing some more games.

    • A few game ideas…
Super Knockout Boxing (almost certainly require two controllers)
      A star Wars lightsaber game
Fishing game (family/child oriented, not a serious hardcore title)
A fully fleshed out table tennis title (not the lightweight Sports Champions fluff)
Start The Party 2 – Fully fleshed out. Special 2 player/2 controller battles, etc.

  2. I’m happy that they didn’t include the analog controller. I’m a pretty experienced ps3 gamer, but I don’t think I could handle swinging the move while at the same time using the analog thingy.

    • If I remember correctly, there was an interview with Anton Mikhailov where he said exactly that. They looked at a thumbstick on the move, but trying to use it AND swing your hand about was counter intuitive.

  3. We could be seeing this in the future for the PS4 possibly once they refine the tech!

  4. I don’t thing the built in joystick would have been cofortable or even practical. More games would be great though. “cough” Sorcery “cough”

    • SORCERY! I heard it’s going for a summer release and I’m not buying Move until it’s out so there.

Oh and this controller does look feature fantastic but it would be rubbish to control. you can’t use a joystick and press the buttons with one hand so if anything the joystick would have to be on the bottom of the controller so you can control it with your fingers. But that’d be very weird. I think the Move controllers as they are are great but I’ve no reason pushing me to buy it yet.

      • After rippin’ into it and some after thought. It does seem pretty neat. Ambitious efforts are what makes something great

      • On http://www.thehut.com they have given Sorcery a Feb 2011 release date. Let’s hope so!

      • I read that and but only the day before I had one of those dreams which you know you’re controlling when you’re sort of awake in the mornin’ and in the dream it was me finding out that Sorcery was not going to happen and how I would respond to such an article. Ofc in the dream my post was first and it spanned the page just with the word nooooooooooooooooo!!!

  5. Move II: Son of Move.

  6. it would be awesome for games like warhawk and gta….
you can move and shoot when on foot but when you get into an aircraft, you can use it as a joystick.

  7. Wish they’d made the navigation controller like that so it could be either a navigation controller or a second move.

  8. To be honest, im yet to use my navigation controller on any game. I’m sure there will be titles soon, but as of just now, that feature isn’t really “missing” in my eyes.

  9. This original patent remind me of Dr Who’s sonic screwriver for some reason.

Everything Listed above sounds rather convoluted for a motion controler, an anologue stick would have been nice but then there would have been button problems, I have no doubt that things that were jestisoned were done so for good reason!

  10. I dont like the inbuilt joystick thing, it would be hard to control and move the controller at the same time with one hand
