Trophy Support Mandatory

Fri, Nov 21, 2008 at 12:45 pm

News

videogamer.com have reported that Sony will be forcing mandatory trophies on developers in January 2009.

What that means is that every new game published will have to support trophies or Sony won’t approve it. This is good news because it means no more trophy patches for games a couple of months after they’re released so no replaying games just for trophies. It also means nofi won’t be run ragged trying to keep the internet’s best PS3 trophy list up to date.

In an act of pure conjecture I’m going to predict that this might give the secondary market (pre-owned) a surge as people are no longer holding onto games for a few months waiting for trophies. Play, earn trophies, trade in. all within a week or two. This seems contrary to all other noises we’re hearing from the gaming world.

You can discuss this (and anything else you want to discuss) in our Forums. In fact, Ghost5 already is.

I’m glad they’re making trophies mandatory, it’s certainly taken a while but now we don’t have to put up with the crap the developers have been spouting about not putting trophies in PS3 versions of multi platform games.

    Bethesda, I’m looking at you.

bah, I beat you to it by 3 minutes by posting it in the forums…

anyway this is good news all though a good 90% of new games released now are supporting them. This should mean the new street fighter game due for release in Feb should support them as previously they said they weren’t

I remember there was something said about mandatory trophies in the exclusive TSA interview with the Novastrike developers. It’s good Sony finally does this step. The trophy patches some month later are pretty annoying.

Fair point, should I re-mark this as rumour then? I’ve found other sites now that are quoting it as news but there are no sources disclosed.

So this basically means that a shit-load of games will be coming out on the 31st December ;P

    colossalblue Says:

It might mean that some developers rush to submit their games in December (which could presumably then be released in January or February without trophies, this deadline is apparently only for submission) but that would probably be discouraged.

Good news. I always thought it a little harsh that some people can never catch their mates on trophies just because they don’t like the right games!
I can’t imagine it’s very difficult to implement trophies anyway. I just hope devs keep the interesting challenges going like the Pixeljunk Monsters ones which are a genius extension to the game (though why the hell are they one player only!)
