Firmware 2.80 arrived this week as an optional update officially consisting of improvements to the “playback quality of some PS3 software”. Other reports have said it contained some developer-only features of features that are not yet enabled. Two things it seems to have done are block the use of the Open Remote Play PC application and lock the microphone level at 3 from those with the official Sony headset.
Many complained that there was not much in it even though it took nothing away and was not a compulsory update.
Now VG247 are reporting, presumably via various threads by a certain poster on various forums going by the name of “Super_Secret”, that they know some of the features that will arrive with Firmware 3.0 which they say is set for a “pre-Christmas” release. They claim to have been told it represents a “huge overhaul” and has drawn comparison with last year’s 360 NXE update “in some respects”.
Features noted so far are:
They also tease that they have been told more but that we will just have to wait. Nothing too Earth-shattering in that list, and nothing really unexpected – we’ve known about the grief reporting for some time but the user rating system might be a nice tweak, a la Xbox Live. We will see what else we can find out from this Super_Secret dude, and let you know.

Seems like I’m in the minority of people who enjoy putting a game (or movie) into the machine and playing it. As I’m about to do right now.

Well when I want to play a game, I put one in, start it up and play it. Personally I’m pretty happy with that. I’m honestly not fussed about installs/updates. So the changes stated above won’t make any difference to me.

• I hope they let you modify the size of the XMB , icon size and all ,
• Data transfer would be good via the messaging system ( so you could sent music and video instead of just photos )
• Move the damned battery indicator to the left hand side ( ! )
• Cut down the time to load trophies ( why does take so damned long ? )
• Increased compatibility with Wordpress websites ( hint , hint , nudge , nudge , wink , wink )
• Video player upgrade , so it becomes a bit easier to watch streamed/downloaded content
• The ability to change your Avatar to whatever you want ( ! )
• A few more funky visual effects to watch while listening to tunes
• Video store ( ! )
…. have I missed anything ??

So many possible copyright infringment which will never be allowed. Data transfer? Any avatar? That’s a lot of porn right there!

I know , lol , it would just need some moderation though . Still if you can download it straight to your ps3 , what’s the harm in sharing it ?

its not a copyright infringement for using a jpg as an avatar. + only deadbeats or teeny boppers use nude chicks as avatars ;D
some good ideas there, altho the XMB dosnt need any modifying, thats just being fussy.. they could have it so you could customize it i guess.. icon size: small, medium, large.

YouTube and iPlayer do work. Try it.
Don’t know about some not being compatible though.

1. In game/video screenshot/print screen ability? This was talked about awhile ago and still has not been patched. Is this one THAT difficult to program in?
2. In game/video segment capture ability ala FRAPS? Say maybe 30 seconds or so then produces an mp4 file or somthing similiar?
3. Ability to send 10-20 second audio messages to friends instead of text only ala Xboxlive?
4. The obvious in game/XMB cross chat ability.

1. Already in selected games.
The others aren’t exactly big changes or mportant.
The only videos I would like to save to the XMB would be sports games replays and race games replays, etc.

They’re important to me. Let’s say you’re watching an HD family video and you’d like to take a screenshot (from a vid source) of your baby to attach and send to a friend. Can’t do it.
Let’s say you want to take a screenshot of somthing in a game to prove you’ve accomplished something. Can’t do it.

A family video would be ok but this system would be way too open to pirates, so won’t happen. In-game screenshots HAVE already been added to the PS3’s capabilities, see Wipeout HD for example. However it is up to game developers to add them to their game.

Sony made a statement about this:
Jennifer Clark, the Director of SCEA Product Publicity, said:
“These rumors are completely untrue, nothing has been announced or confirmed for upcoming PlayStation firmware, and this is just wild speculation.”

Anyone else share my F.W wishlist?
– Better implementation of trophies, I want friends to see my trophies! I honestly wouldn’t mind to see the level system vanish and be replaced with a slightly….erm…xbox…sort of..points system. or….make the gap between levels the same so you can keep the different trophy types without having people stuck at levels 11 and 12 etc!
– Home avatars at XMB level! (They would have to make more avatar content free to allow us to make them unique enough for a friends list)
– A complete PS3 party system?
I’m aware this may already have been discussed elsewhere but WOW what if….

I know.
Jeese, what would happen if Sony gave its customers what they actually wanted :O Text chat rooms, what the hell…
Then again, their games are better IMO so I can’t complain (too much). And its free :/
Oh and Uncharted FTW.
RIP Jacko may I also add…

Ye, I’m currently finding myself paying full whack for new titles (red faction, virtua tennis) and going ‘trophy hunting’ and then thinking..why? no-one cares!
and then returning to my XMB and crappy preset avatars and the aging XMB!
PS3 UI needs a REVAMP! soooooon please Sony.

Can anyone remember that guy who mocked up those fake XMB remakes?
Employ that guy. They looked awesome, MILES better than the XMB we have at the moment. Its functinal yeah, but looks ugly as hell.
Soooo…
1. Improve look of XMB akin to newer more stylish style (can you say that?). What that guy did basically.
2. Avatars. I am sick of having Captain Qwarg since about 2 years ago. Hows about encoorporate Home and let us have our Home avatars OR unlock new avatars with new games a la Xbox Live?
3. Cross Game chat. Many people here dont want it but you wont use it. I will. And so would many of my friends. Its one feature thats used massively on Live, we need it. But only if….
4. ….they improve connectivity and microphone quality. Whlst playing a game online, its terrible. Whilst your at it Sony improve load times for things like Home amd Trophies. Its truly abismal.
5. Improve the PSN. Loads, quality etc.
There is PLENTY for Sony to do inregards to the PSN and XMB infrastracture. But I guess we arent paying for it, beggars cant be choosers and all that… :/

Sorry, am I not allowed my own opinion?
Yes theres nothing “wrong” in a practical sense, but I don’t like it. So, since this has mostly turned into what we’d like to see in Firmware 3.0, I said I would like to see a redesigned XMB.

one thing I like about the 360 is that any download is also installed as part of the same process. with PS3, once you download it, you then have to click on the stupid icon and install it. no need for two processes. why would someone choose to download something and then not install it? and the installation should also happen in the background, EVEN if a game is playing.

It does when you set the PlayStation to turn off automatically when finished downloading, but I guess that it would be better if this was extended to all background downloading.

I thought this too, UNTIL i decided I wanted all my demos and PSN games in alphabetical order. If you want any games to list in alphabetical order, you have to install them from Z to A. This is an example of why it’s nice to install at your time of choosing and not be forced.

Or put them in order of recently played and turn each game on for two seconds, so you have them in order.

Ive read the whole thing now and many of you have valid points, but none of you have mentioned our browser, which I consider to be rather underpar.
The last time I heard we were getting a contract with BBC to get BBCi player, I would really love to watch some programs in HD and download epic episodes of my favourite shows.
The one post that caught my attention though was the one saying, “I just put my disc in and play the game”, I agree sir- this is a games console after all and if sony are going to do anything then they should work to have exclusivity permanantly for the best games out there.
A lot of the other suggestions are not anywhere near as important as this imo.
We are heading in the right direction I say and although this may be a bit contradictorary I would like to see some of these things but am not going to get impatient waiting for them to happen.
After all these things take time and money to do.
