Review: Archer Maclean’s Mercury [PSP] [13]

Ignition have just let us know that the classic PSP puzzler, Archer Mclean’s Mercury, is now available for download from the PlayStation Store across Europe.  Mercury, the “original and now iconic puzzle game,” involves the player trying to manoeuvre blobs of mercury around each level.  The levels get progressively tougher and more complicated, with switches, platforms, obstacles and hazards being introduced into the mix.

We remember this game back in 2005 and it still looks fresh today – the game is a smart, addictive and visually unique puzzler and one that will keep your brain nice and busy on the morning train ride into work.  It’s notable for being the first third party re-release too, as far as we know – let’s hope that lots more publishers jump on board the digital download bandwagon and get their PSP games onto the Store in time for the PSPgo.

  1. ERm, there’s been LOADS of PSP games that aren’t published by Sony that have been released on the PSN. Ultimate Board Game Collection, and another puzzle one just off the top of my head, but there’s loads of them.

    • Re-releases, though? Mercury was originally a 2005 title.

      • What amount of time has to pass for it to count as a re-release? I got both games I said for Christmas and they’ve come out within the last 6 weeks or so, so it’s not been a simultaeneous release.

      • Well ratchet and clank is on the store, so is killzone liberation (us store). And the uk has wipeout pulse. But those are all first party games right?

      • You’ve lost me. There have been absolutely loads of third-party re-releases. What about all the games EA have put on there, such as both Burnout games and both Medal of Honour games a couple of years after they were out on UMD?

There were three or four re-releases last week alone, besides Mercury.

Or does “third-party re-release” mean something totally different else now?

  2. The only way the Sony PSPGo can become a viable purchase is if the PS Store is absolutely crammed with decent titles to choose from, both PS1 classics and PSP titles. As good as Mercury is, it’s never going to be a ’system seller’ – Sony need to take the highest selling titles from the PSP and every platinum title and stick it on the PS Stores worldwide. If they do that, the PSPGo will at least be able to provide the digital gamimg experience it’s meant to in a fully realised way. If the store is bland at the Go’s release, the expensive purchase becomes even more of a waller drainer – a regular PSP with a memory stick can get digital titles as well as having access to the entire UMD library.

£139.99 for a new PSP-3000 at GAME at the minute (not known for their cheapness), which is about £90 less than a Go. Through in an overpriced 32GB memory card pro duo (£50), and you’re still looking at a £40 reduction on the GO, with more games and BIGGER memory capacity than the Go’s standard flash memory.

Anyone considering grabbing a PSP-3000 later this year? I know I am.

    • I’ve already taken the plunge with a 3000… although I will probably invest in a larger memory stick once the store has more content…

Saying that I bought Mercury… less than £5 seemed like a good price point… makes me hope that maybe… just maybe that good and cheap can go together on PSN… If most games become sub £15 then it’s possible the lack of a second hand game market may become less important for the digital download model…

I’m also curious as to what the UMD trade in solution will be… will PSP 3000 ever be able to transfer their UMD’s to memory stick and still retain the disc? Be great for battery life…

      • Being able to copy games onto the UMD would be nice, better than sacrificing your UMD and also one of your five PSN download tickets every time you upgrade your memory or something.

      • Am I right in saying that Sony has no plans to abandon UMD when the PSPgo arrives. So really… will there ever be a need to be able to transfer UMD titles to memory stick.

Sony could upload UMD titles to PSN and allow UMD title owners to download those titles using some sort of verification method, for free.

In any case I have a PSP 1000, a trusty piece of kit which I see no reason to replace with anything thats out now or coming out in the near future. I would like

I would like to see more PS1 titles on PSN and PS2 conversions come out. Oh and trophy support for the PSP would be a “nice to have”.

    • I didn’t realise you could get 32GB Memory Stick Pro Duos, the biggest I’ve found is 16GB.

  3. Wasn’t this released on the store a long time ago? Or is it just me?

    • Yeah, I think it’s more a price cut, than a re-release.

      • I thik it was released in the US but not on the EU store

  4. The main problem is that downloads cost more than retail games, i thought that no box and no manual meant cheaper production costs.
    Loco roco on PSN=£14:99
    Morrisons supermarket loco roco=£9:99
    Loco roco2 PSN=£19:99 — Morrisons=£11:99
and it’s the same with lots of other psp downloads.
I recently saw God of war in PCworld (new) at £7:99, bargain or what?

    • I totally agree and your comparison is new retail box vs new download… second hand you could pick loco roco 1 & 2 for £8 and £10 saving yet more money…

It is good that Mercury is at such a low price point though! Although to my horror CEX.co.uk are selling it shipped for £3… bugger! Still £1.79 premium to have it on my memory stick… might just have been worth it!?

  5. Ooh, I loved Mercury.
Maybe the first game I get for my PSPgo?
    ;)

    • Lets see what other games they bring out yet. :)

  6. I seen that on the store, good price to.

  7. I bought it, bargain!

  8. are they re-releases in that the titles were out on UMD only before coming to the PSN (and I guess there has to be some time period between the two, not like a week later :P )

  9. PQ: Practical Intelligence Quotient was on the store back in October I bought on UMD back in 2006.

Re-releases have been happening for a while and I think it started in europe befoer the usa

  10. You can download to the same device as many times as you like, it is unlimited. Only time you use up a “download ticket” is if you download it to a totally different piece of hardware.

  11. but you can link up as many psp to your psn id as you like; so you could download one copy of a game and play it on every psp in your house at the same time.

For multiplayer games the dload option to great compared to buy a copy on umd each.

  12. I love the idea of being able to buy a new or second hand UMD… then using some verification process online and downloading the same title to my memory stick… sounds amazing…

I’m just wondering if that system would be open to abuse… how would the verify that I own the disc… would they be happy with second hand games being bought for £5 when their official download is £15?

I’d love it if I could leave all my UMD’s at home and just fill up one 32gb stick…

  13. *think

  14. http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/32GB-SANDISK-MICRO-SD-PRO-DUO-MEMORY-STICK-FOR-PSP-PS3_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQitemZ320385407109QQsalenotsupported

Seems there is a work around using an adapter too… £70… wonder if it’s any good… ie will it still be as fast as a standard Duo?

  15. At least this is the first one with a decent price attached. It’s a re-release at a price acceptable if we are to seriously consider a PSP Go. Perhaps this is why this re-release is notable.
