No, Sony, don't mess this one up.

Is There A Beta Game Than ModNation?

Article written by nofi in PS3 News, on Monday, November 9, 2009 at 0:00.

ModNation Racers was a nice surprise when it was revealed, especially given the fact that it’ll fall under Sony’s Play Create Share label alongside LittleBigPlanet and Gravity Crash.  Despite some fairly detailed character customisation and that level designer, Sony appeared to be keeping the game simple and to the point.  Until now, though, because it’s been revealed that the game will come with a story penned by Hollywood writers – surely something a racing game based on primary colours doesn’t need unless it’s got Lightning McQueen in it.

This ridiculous news, which comes via the latest issue of Qore, is supported by some good news: there’s two player split screen in addition to the twelve player online racing, plenty of character, track and kart customisation and, twelve months down the line, the option to add in water.  We kid.  Seriously, though – United Front do appear to have nailed the track editor at least, even if it does appear a little simplistic in the way you actually craft the course.  Owners of the Game Of The Year edition of LBP will get access to the ModNation Racers beta early next year.

  1. 2 player split-screen? Was hoping for four…

    • So was I.

    • Question is though, is it 2 player local or 2 player splitscreen online? Ive been playing halo on some friends 360s via system link and being able to locally play against someone else is something sony is seriously missing

      • Why would it be online splitscreen? that would be retarded and kill the point of online multiplayer. its local obviously

      • Why would it kill the point of online MP? I just can’t see your point of view on this or even express why you’re wrong…

Mario Kart on the Wii has got split screen online, and I don’t see anyone complaining about that…

      • I hope you’ll be able to log in with two different accounts when playing split screen. It’s implemented in too few games at the moment. :(

    • same

    • Ditto, I was hoping this would be the perfect casual racer for local multiplayer on the PS3. Motorstorm is good and all but it’s got a steep learning curve. I’m much less excited about this now.

      • You’ve also pointed out something there too!
Motorstorm is one of the best looking games on the PS3, but it still manages 4 screens, full visuals and 12 AI opponents.
        Why can’t this?
It’s a kart racer. It’s practically the LAW that this has 4 player.

      • You mean Pacific Rift or course not the original ;-)

    • same, hopefully it will be added in.

  2. Game of the Year isn’t over here so does Europe get the Beta access via other means , if at all?

    • Haha! That’s funny.

Dry humour aside, I seriously doubt it.

    • “no plans for europe”
      there i said it.

  3. haha! That news /is/ ridiculous!

    Also…I NEED the beta!!!

    • haha lets try trade some BF:BC2 code for it i can spare a few

      • haha!
        Brilliant point.

  4. A storyline isnt really needed for a game like this but if it works properly then it could be good.
I’m mostly interested in the track editor/multiplayer aspects of this game.

    • Yeah, I guess, LittleBigPlanet kinda had a storyline I suppose, so that COULD work. Here’s hoping for a Modnation Racers movie! ;D

  5. I don’t really know what to think of this lol…How can a racing game, one such as this, have a story line? Especially one written by professional Hollywood writers? It makes no sense lol

    • Crash Team Racing – one of the best karting games ever – had a story line, that kind of made sense. It wasn’t needed and you didn’t have to pay attention as it all boiled down to ‘race this track to save the universe…’

  6. Once upon a time there was a Kart Racer, I thought I was pretty good at it and then I played FruitOfDoom. The End.

    • Another fairy tale with a happy ending then?

  7. You can mod anyone’s uploaded tracks too. Credit is even given to the original creator!

  8. Only 2 player split screen?!
My excitement for this game just plummeted.
The best bit about Mario Kart and Crash Team Racing is THE 4 PLAYER SPLIT SCREEN!
Yeah, It’ll still be amazing, but really, not half as good as I was expecting.

  9. Man i want this beta. I’m looking forward to the track editor and multiplayer.

  10. what about those of us who’ve had mbp since it was lanuched?
    do we get the beta?

  11. Shit. What if it does have Lightning McQueen in it? It never would, but what if?!

  12. Years ago me and my sister spent not weeks but months playing the battle mode of Mario Kart 64. What great memories when we played with 2 people more in the 4 screen mode.

I had great expectation for ModNation Racers and its circuit editor (you know, the idea of create the tracks near my house and invite my neighbours to race them on a insane way) but if it does come with only 2 players splitscreen after so many other kart games managed the 4 players splitscreen in basic videogame systems… I’m afraid this game will lost one of its points.

  13. I think that the game could ship without a story, leaving you to create on your own. But having a story mode allows the developers to give you some of the games capabilities (similar to LBP), and adding a meaningful story to it would make it fun to play.
I think it’s a good addition. I’m sure you don’t even have to play it if you don’t want to though. Just go on creating.

  14. I’m really looking forward to this game…even more now knowing about the 2 player split screen!!

    • Oh, I meant to ask, why is Gravity Crash ruled out in the above article with regards to Sony’s Play Create Share label? Please don’t tell me the level builder’s been taken out.

  15. kinda like cars
