The guys over at Polyphony Digital have revealed the exact sales figures, worldwide, for the Gran Turismo series. The total, the figure at the very bottom: 53,000,000 units across all territories and all formats. Staggering.  Figures (which we can only assume include digital downloads, too) are correct as of September this year, although we can’t imagine many more copies of Prologue have been sold since.

  1. Official: Europe <3 GT

    • Yeah, well over half the worldwide sales.

      • 24,090 is less than half of 53,020.

It’s good to see Europe as the dominant supporter once again.

      • D’oh!

      • maybe just under half but that means europe on it’s own bought almost as many copies as the rest of the world.
and still sony treats europe almost as an afterthought.

    • It is actually Europe <3 PlayStation
There are also more PS3s in Europe than anywhere else…

    • And we Europeans have bought 3 times as many copies of GT5P than the US in the last six months, 0.6m vs 0.2m. http://www.thesixthaxis.com/2009/05/13/gran-turismo-it-sells-lots/

Not bad going for a game that’ll be two years old in March and has often been derided as an overpriced demo.

  2. GT4 sold 6.4 million in Europe alone….what!! That’s insane. I can’t see GT5 beating that with the current PS3 install base.

    • maybe a reduced price slim bundle will help over xmas…if they released GT5 for xmas of course. I really think they missed the boat on that, sales for consoles are always high around xmas, so a GT5 bundle would be a success for both the PS3 and GT5!

      • A Christmas GT5 bundle seems unlikely, but there could be an Easter bundle!! ;)

  3. I call next price drop to £199 for GT5 release.

  4. GT5:Pro left me feeling abit cold… Maybe its because it wasn’t a full game, il try GT5 when that comes out.

    • GT5:Pro left me with frostbite. Stopped playing the game after a few months; I’m living in hope it’s no indication of the full game’s experience.

  5. Do these figures take into account multiple downloads for 1 PSN id?I’ve downloaded it 3 times.Though its hardly surprising it sold so well since its GT and we did have a bit of a games shortage when it launched. Can’t wait for 5.

    • Well, you bought it once, I presume… And this about sales not number of downloads.

      • Unlikely. If that were the case people without PS3s would have to have been buying it.

      • GT5P has been sold 4 million times and there are about 23 million PS3s worldwide…

      • Yes but the article says 53 million units have been sold so i assume the figures count each download as a purchase.

      • That’s 53 million GT games in total, including all versions GT, GT2, GT3, GT4, etc.

Re-read the first two sentences of the article.

      • all versions of the game from day dot

  6. i was looking at that and i thought the numbers were a bit low, then i saw it was how many thousand copies were sold.
who lists their numbers like that anyway?
nobody says 53 thousand thousand, you’d list it as 53 million
    impressive number nonetheless.

    • Listing numbers like that is quite common in financial documents.

      • ah well, i don’t read many financial documents, probably why i’ve never come across it before.

    • its a Japanese company, they do it like that

  7. Interesting that Europe seems to be the biggest supporter, yet gets the least amount of love..  Yes, Im generalising, but Sony et al, do seem to cater more for the US/JP even tho EU is the bigger market.

    • Probably because they are after new customers in US/JP more than EU.

    • Not that I’m defending SCEE, as they should have got it worked out by now, but “Europe” is by far the most complicated of Sony’s regions. Quoting from SCEE, “Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, based in London, is responsible for the distribution, marketing and sales of PlayStation 3, PSP and PlayStation 2 hardware and software in over 99 territories across Europe, the Middle East, Africa and Oceania.”

The similar statement from SCEA is, “Sony Computer Entertainment America Inc. (SCEA) is responsible for the continued growth of the PlayStation® market in the United States and Canada.”

And SCEJ only has Japan and South Korea to look after, AFAIK.

      • As by far the biggest contributor to these global figures, Europe should be looked after so much better than how it currently feels. Even with territory variation, Sony should endeavour to make us at least feel like we’re on an even keel. However, top figures no matter what.

  8. That’s stupid numbers for Prologue – it’s more of a demo than anything but I guess the sales of that helped with dev costs for GT5.

    • but it was the first new real gt game in years and the first for the ps3.
apart from that one track demo from launch.
anybody still got that on their ps3?

      • Yeah, GT HD is still lurking at the bottom of my list of games on my XMB. First thing I downloaded off PSN.

      • Even though I had the opportunity to download Gran Turismo HD I decided at the time I wasn’t interested but now I kinda wish I had. Shame it’s not available anymore.

Anyway, I wish they’d have listed the no. of downloads HD got even though it technically wasn’t sold just to complete the data. It would be interesting how many were interested/knew it was available that earlier in the PS3’s life.

      • Oops substitute earlier for early! Doh.

    • I know this argument’s as old as the hills but GT5P really isn’t a demo. The Need for Speed: Shift Demo was a Demo, 3 cars and two tracks, limited to 2 lap races. GT5P has over 70 cars and even though the track options aren’t exactly huge, there are 12 options and a decent number of races to try out too (including the dealership ones). It even has online, though not implemented particularly well.

It’s a game I keep coming back to after eighteen months: for example, having seen Jezza Clarkson play around with a Corvette Z06 on a re-run of Top Gear, I bought it in the game and tuned it until it was virtually uncontrollable – superb fun with a wheel!

The issue is really not whether it’s a demo – it’s not – but whether it was worth the £18 or so you paid for it. I say yes. But I do wish PD would get their arse in gear and release the full thing, it’s more or less the reason I bought the PS3 (two years ago!).

  9. And some people wonder why PD even release the Prologue editions. Well, they should just look at these numbers.

  10. I believe that Europe gets the least love because it is a continent that requires most work for a company. Think of all the languages etc. Sony must have to spend a fortune localising software etc. In North America there is one language, in Asia there are few languages. And as already mentioned. If Europeans are already buying the hardware and software, then Sony will naturally focus growing their customer base in the other regions. especially Asia which is developing fast and has a huge population of potential future gamers.

    • I’d agree with that but then I think whats going on with the PS1 games on the PSN? Those games will already be made with multi languages so I dont get why different regions get different treatment there.

    • most usa/canadian titles have a spanish & french option too i believe?

  11. Maybe as historically Europe has sold more copies of GT than the other territories, then we’ll get it over here before the March Japenese release?

I don’t hold out too much hope though!! ;)

  12. typical sony.
Europe counts to almost half of their sales so this is how they repay us?
by giving us the games weeks if not months after the US.
by charging us more than the US
by making some of the best stuff exclusive to the US.
by giving Command & Conquer: Red Alert to the US today but giving us WHINNY THE POO!
thanks sony, way to treat your avid fans.
there saying fuck you to their loyal fans and saying come on in to the people who ignore them.

    • What ‘best stuff’ is exclusive to the US?

      • they got a cinema screening off uncharted 2 and everyone got a free copy, they do this for everything R&C resistance KZ2 infamous all had early screenings in the US and no where else.
fortune hunter edition for uncharted 2.
        god of war collection.
god of war 3 ultimate edition.
most games sony publishes they dont release guides here for some reason, i had to buy my KZ2, R2,R&C and infamous guides through ebay imported from the US.

      • The cinema screenings of Uncharted 2 were to a limited number of people (I forget, but it was a few hundred at most). It’s not as if they were handing it out to everybody in the US. Europe has had Blu-Ray releases that never came out in the US – disk versions of ‘Siren: Blood Curse’ or ‘Wipeout HD Fury’ were not available in the US. The grass is not always greener on the other side.

Can’t you just use gamefaqs for guides? I’ve always thought they were kind of overpriced and unnecessary.

      • not only uncharted 2, as i said almost every AAA exclusive gets a exclusive early screening.
as for the guides, yea i could check online but there no where near as in depth and dont have the centennial value the guides have.
        i like collecting guides.
        forgot to mention limited editions.
INDIA! FUCKING INDA for all countries got a limtied edition of uncharted 2.
        australia?
        we missed out.
i think its safe to say AU buys more games than bloody india!
point being europe is getting the complete finger compare to the US, when europe is their largest market.
as i said before sonys saying to europe thanks for your money now fuck off.
and sonys saying to the US look at us were so good we have this this and this come check it out, you know US we love you so much you want to get married?
ok i got a little carried away there but you get the point.
