Sony’s media/investor presentation is goldmine of information for Sony’s 2010 plans, first we got the news there could be a subscription PSN service, followed by Sony’s plans to branch out to non-game software on the Ps3, and now confirmation of the previously rumoured fact that 3D gaming will be coming to the PS3 via a firmware update. Again in the section “5 Key Advantages Of The PS3″ they say that “all PS3 units will be firmware upgradeable to 3D”
This will presumabely be rolled out once devs have had chance to support it, and crucially once Sony get enough 3D capable Bravia’s on shop shelves.

I dont see 3d taking off until at least next xmas time. Many people have only just upgraded to a HD tv and wont want to upgrade again so soon.

yeah but you’ll still need a new tv.
and that won’t make every game display in 3d will it?
avatar is supposed to be the first game to support 3d displays isn’t it?

Avatar supports it, and is quite good. Not great, but there’s definite depth to it.

What about that side scrolling kung fu thing that was on the store a while back? I had the demo, it was OK (ish) 3D wise.

Please don’t anyone Angelina that I might be saving up for an extortionately priced OLED/3D/HD telly when they eventually hit the market!

I woudnt mind upgrading my bedroom TV to a TV that supports 3D when they hit the market as I’ve had my 32″ Samsung HD for almost 2 years now.

Man – I am so excited about 3d technology. It’s close enough to brush against awkwardly.

But is the PS3 fast enough? If it needs to draw the frame from two angles, that means it actually has to work twice as hard.

thats what I think,
It’s effectively twice the framerate, and it struggles enough as it is in anything more than cartoony PSN titles

Sony have been talking about some of the work being done by the TV and future PS3’s eventually being equiped with the extra hardware needed. The z-axis would just be needed to sent over the hdmi cable to the TV to generate the 2 images if the extra hardware that was needed was built into the TV. It would also mean potentially any PS3 game could be played in 3D (though any FMV’s would still be 2D unless processed in realtime).

if the game is designed from the start to be able to display in 3d i’m sure they’ll get the best out of the hardware.
maybe a 3d mode will have slightly lowers resolution or something.
i’ve played a few games on pc with the old red/blue glasses and the effect is pretty damn good.
and this could also be used for 3d movies as well i would imagine.
rendering wouldn’t be an issue then.
just the price of the tellies.

Ideally, they’d stick an anaglyph mode on there just for us plebs who don’t want to shell out serious cash for next years big flop but I doubt it.

Oh! That’s perfect! I hope the price will be less 3000$ for 52″ 3D TV.

My TV is as important an acquisition as my PS3. No way am I changing something that in the next 3 years, at least! Good luck with 3D, etc… but I’ll wait for it to saturate the market first.

My 50″ is seeming a bit small. A 60″ 3D set would be the perfect excuse to upgrade
My credit card is quivering……..
