You may have noticed that Metal Gear Solid has become the subject of a few regular features this week on TSA and Lunchtime Discussion will be no different.  It’s probably safe to say that the Metal Gear Solid saga will go down in history as one of gaming’s most-loved; but do you feel this way? With storylines that would confuse Tom Clancy and cut-scenes taking hours and hours of your time, is MGS a work of genius or is it just hype?

From my personal point of view, Metal Gear Solid on the first Playstation is one of my favourite games of all time. Sure, the story was very long and some of it went over my head when I first played, but it was also very engaging and completely different to anything that I played before. MGS 2, whilst I still like, was lacking something in my opinion. I’ll blame Raiden, everyone else does.

I’ll be honest with you, I have played roughly 1 hour of MGS3 (Snake Eater?) and I hated it. Too stealthy, too fussy and and a step too far for my enjoyment. MGS 4, due to it being the first ’next-gen’ MGS, was a must buy for me and overall, I absolutely loved it. Again, there were a few self-indulgent cutscenes and a few sections of gameplay that weren’t on par – most noticeably the bike chase – and again, I’m still not entirely sure that I understood all of it.

Overall, I would have to say that Kojima has created a genius franchise, which has proved that video games can rival (or even out-do) the film industry for content, enjoyment and longevity. It appears to be a ‘marmite’ game though; it has its legions of fans but it also has its haters.

Which are you?

  1. Metal Gear Solid was great, although I pretty much threw the controller and didn’t play it for 6 months when I got to the ‘get the sniper rifle’ bit. Just felt like pointless fluff to add some time.

Metal Gear Solid 2 was great as well. Kinda special because a friend of mine died when I was about 3/4 of the way through, and for some reason I sat down and finished MGS2. The last quarter of that game is incredibly crisp in my mind because of it.

3 and 4 never really grabbed me for some reason, seemed to just go a bit wild. I really want to go get the older Metal Gear games though and I’m interested by Rising.

    • Three has the best stealth and bosses in any game in my opinion. It had you hiding in plain sight, but in camouflage, so you were literally right under a bad guys nose, and you were holding your breath waiting to see if he would spot you.
Also, you haven’t played the fourth! Don’t judge! It’s all about the complete experience. Not just a playtest.

      • I’ll judge if I want to *glowers*

Also if they didn’t grab me surely I should judge. If I liked 1 and 2 and was turned off by 3 and 4 maybe they’re doing something wrong?

      • I don’t like to ever judge a game too quickly.
I hated Prince of Persia all the way through it. Then I played it a second time and LOVED it. I platinumed it and STILL want to play it again.
Had I gone with my gut instinct, I would never even have reached the half way point.
I did judge DJ Hero the other day, but, like Guitar Hero, I’m sure it’ll get better if I get used to it.

      • I mean I know I shouldn’t judge really, but surely it can’t be entirely me if a series I previously really enjoyed fails to grab hold of me, drag me into a store and wave the game in my face yelling “THIS! BUY THIS!” and then takes the money from my wallet and pays.

  2. I am firmly in the LOVE IT camp. MGS was a ground breaking game in soo many ways. MGS2 tanker mission was awesome. Outer haven got a bit boring. MGS 3 – challenging!! MGS 4 – the pinnicle. These games i will always love. Playing the original on my PSP is nostalgic, and enjoyable I dont mind the cut scenes. Its all part of the total emersion/entertainment package which i enjoy.

  3. The MGS series was definitely genius, and the first game (PS1 MGS) is the best one, imo..  Not too overdone on the cutscenes and the story was amazing.  Possibly the first game that actually made me care about my enemy(Sniper Wolf), and one of the most original boss fights ever (Psycho Mantis)..  Fantastic game.

  4. MGS is both (kinda) genuis and plenty of community hype. The franchise has done many, many things to justifiably earn its stripes but equally I think it’s almost too highly revered. It seems to be talked about like it’s a cure for cancer whereas I feel that it’s just a great, great game. Nothing more, nothing less.

  5. Are any of the PSP MGS games any good?

  6. Surely the genius IS the hype???

  7. The fourth game is my favourite game of all time.
Never loved a game so much!
The gameplay, story, music, voice acting, it was all perfect.
I understand the story and cutscenes might not be for everyone, but I think there’s nothing better!
Fantastic characters! And it was so involving. That microwave corridor scene!

  8. I had not played any MGS until MGS4 and I thought it was bloody brilliant. In fact I’ve strated playing through it again recently and me playing game through again a second time is unheard of.

  9. Not a fan of MGS, sorta liked 2 but the others are just too boring.

  10. Mgs 1 = Amazing
Mgs 2 = Mind blowing Story , Crap lead Character
Mgs 3 = Cool Twist, Hardest of the series, Lots of needless changing of camo
Mgs 4 = Epic game, too much dialogue, Octocamo FTW

  11. I agree that MGS is one of the greatest series for the PS systems and I read the MGS4 Database DLC, it really helped me understand the plot.
