Flange

Flanging is exactly like the FPS genre. Honest.

Yes, flange. The second of my new weekly column where I take a random word given to me by anyone and write an article around it with my mad writing skillz (I’m joking, don’t shoot me).

You might be wondering what flange means, but don’t worry, there’s a couple of definitions and I’m going to give you the one I’m focusing on.

From Wikipedia: Flanging is an audio effect that occurs when two identical signals are mixed together, but with one signal time-delayed by a small and gradually changing amount, usually smaller than 20 milliseconds.

So it’s the exact same thing playing all over again with a slight delay? It sounds like first person shooters to me. FPS games are getting more and more like each other every time they release, mainly due to the fact that every time an FPS has a revolutionary idea, all of the others copy said idea and re-brand it to try and hide the ‘yoink!’ sound effect.

Case in point: Modern Warfare and its multiplayer’s perkiness. A brilliant idea; it adds depth to the game’s online mode, it manages to change each player’s setup whilst still keeping it at a near-perfect balance. In fact, it was such a brilliant idea that it’s been copied pretty much everywhere since. An example is Uncharted 2 and it’s Boosters, with the only real differences being that Boosters tend to involve increasing accuracy, or clip size, they’re a bitch to unlock (you can only buy two until you’re level 10) and you can only use two at a time.

Obviously, Perks are a great idea, so we don’t particularly mind them being copied, do we? Something that is much more debatable is regenerating health. It’s been everywhere since whenever the hell it was and I’m not certain I agree with the idea of hiding behind a rock having healing properties.

Set-piece gameplay was another mostly-MW thing before it spread like a virus through FPS games. Faux-realism is part of this, with incredible scenarios designed to make you feel like the badassiest of the badass whilst you’re playing through. Modern Warfare 2 is not realistic in gameplay despite what the damn Times says, and the whole damn genre is following it into this weird world of faux-realism like Infinity Ward is the damn shepherd. Well I do not want.

An example of something that wasn’t originally in MW being ‘borrowed’ into other games is the sentry turret from Killzone 2. Oddly enough, that was taken by the mighty Modern Warfare 2, so you can thank Guerrilla games for that sentry turret that keeps shooting you full of holes (philosophical question of the week; how can something be full of holes?) in MW2, then.

Now, I expect good ideas to be taken from games and used in others, but in the FPS genre it’s much more prevalent than in any of the others and it’s bringing the genre to a standstill. Everyone is doing the same thing. How long do you think it will be before another game releases with MW2’s customisable killstreaks? A year? Less?

The most original FPS I’ve played recently was Mirror’s Edge, which probably doesn’t count as an FPS because I didn’t actually shoot anybody whilst I was playing it (guns suck). It’s probably an FPF – First Person Freerunner. Has anything been taken from Mirror’s Edge and added into other FPS’? As a matter of fact, you might say ‘yes’, at least if you consider that what looks like first person freerunning in Brink, which is actually an FPS+f (First Person Shooter plus freerunning).

The key difference between Brink’s apparent borrowing of freerunning from Mirror’s Edge and everyone’s stealing of Perks from MW2 is that it is done in a completely different way. In ME you had to press the right buttons at the right time to get anywhere (and then die and do it again over and over), whilst in Brink you hold a smart button and point slightly up or slightly down and it does all the work for you. Perk-copies are usually exactly the same with tiny differences, like having to buy Boosters and only being able to have two of them.

Please, developers, take this as a plea from one who is a big fan of FPS games but starting to feel war-wearied by the same things being all over the entire genre. Stop copying Modern Warfare. We know it’s a good game, but it’s not the holy grail nor is it the be-all and end-all of FPS’. Killzone 2 did a great job of being a different kind of game from MW, it was slower and more tactical, whilst MW is clearly a twitch shooter right from the beginning, filled with unrealistic spectacle and improbably scenarios that have always been bound to get dull eventually. MW2 just about got away with it, do not push it further or I will not buy another FPS. After Brink.

Oh, and just to finish this off, Modern Warfare and Modern Warfare 2 are not that good.

  1. I approve of this article because it:

    a) was funny,

    b) mentioned that Brink is cool. This is because Brink is cool. Also Paul Wedgewood is a good presenter, I’d advise that Splash Damage offer a service where he can come to your house and play the game for you whilst talking about it.

  2. everything has been done before, don’t know if there ever will be something new in the genre

    • No, everything you can think of has been done before because you’re only thinking of it because it has been done in games previously…

Deep psychology, there. Maybe. Not at all.

      • True, but can you think of something new you want to see in a FPS

      • No, that is my point ;-)

If I was in a team of game designers I’m certain I could come up with things, though.

      • Exactly! I didn’t know I wanted the stuff that’s in Brink until I saw it. And now I really, really do.

      • I can. To see my feet with the correct perspective and also to have your arm not look detached from your body and to be floating in the air ;)
There’s TWO simple requests that nobody has ever done before

      • that’s something very few games seem to get right, actually model your body and have you actually looking from where your head actually is and not somewhere  near your armpit.
and now imagine that but with the 3d technology, where each viewpoint comes from where each eye would be.
has anybody actually thought of doing that before or have i just had a totally unique idea? :)

    • I disagree, initially titles like Rogue Warrior were going to be a squad based shooters with some interesting gameplay mechanics but fall short of critic interest and end up in the generic shooter pile.
Operation Flashpoint does things differently than every other shooter out there by adding piles of realism with some genuinely tricky gameplay.

The only limit is the designers imagination ;)

  3. Top article, flange is one of those words in the English language that just makes me chuckle when I hear it, not due to it’s more explicit definition bit because i just find it highly amusing.

    • Apologies for the double post, not sure why my stupid iPhone did that.

      • Fixed it for you ;-)

    • I love flange me !

  4. This is one of the reasons I didn’t buy MW2. Not that I played MW for that matter. Or any other COD…

  5. The only use of the word flange i have seen that can be viewed at work. Well done!

Shame Brink got delayed but hey i would rather my AAA games be spread throughout the year and not crammed into easter. I wonder if we will ever see a flange person shooter!

  6. Totally agree with you.
It’s almost impossible to find something new and fresh in games today. Mirrors Edge was last original FPS game i have played.
And despite fact that I’m playing almost every day MW2s Multi-player you have 100% right this game is not that good. The problem is that there is no real alternative now. Every developer is to scared to confront his title with Activisions Black horse.

    • Killzone 2, Borderlands, Battlefield BC2 (when it releases, obviously), there’s loads of other FPS games you could be playing.

      • Could be playing the BC2 demo.

      • *beta*

      • Sorry meant beta. My comment on LD has made me crazy

      • I totally forgot about borderlands but in this case this semi-cartoon graphic and class system seams to be too similar to Team Fortress 2. And I think in this case TF2 is much better game. And borderands looks to me like poor copy. (of course it’s my personal opinion)
BC2… I don’t have beta key so I’m waiting till next year.

      • yh i gt the battlefield bc2 beta but is there any other betas coming out soon

    • Mirror’s Edge is not an FPS. It’s fast paced action game with First Person view.

      • It’s an FPF.

      • There has to be a Market for other innovative games to come up concepts based on other first person view activities, I mean everything we do in day to day life is viewed from a first person perspective (unless you’re a premiership footballer or a wwe wrestler)

      • also rubbish

      • It has first person view + you can use guns to shot people. For me sounds like FPS ;) but still for me it’s most original game from all FP(x) games.

      • You don’t have to shoot anyone. You can’t really call a game that doesn’t make you shoot anyone any form of shooter.

      • Err…you shoot in Mirrors Edge, with guns, from a First Person perspective, therefore, by definition, it is a FPS :-P

      • If there’s a game where Hugging is one of the mechanics, and not the primary mechanics, that’s from a first person perspective is it a First Person Hugger?

      • FP…er..F (again) First Person Fighter!

I realise fight night have done it, but what about a Tekken clone?

come to think of it, it would be rock hard to play, but if executed well, could be fun :D

      • Well if we’re going to get into semantics then all FPS are FPM. First Person Movers. The primary function is to move :-P

  7. Excellent article. Reason argument, smut and slagging off MW2.

  8. FPSs rarely do anything new, and if they do, it’s just the one thing. Although in fairness, there are very few genres that do anything new nowadays.
Racing: how different is one game to another…not very I think. Quantity of boost/pickups/other gimmicks available.
RPG: We level up, kill stuff, get some better weapons, repeat.
Sport: these are literally identical games. Literally. FIFA 09 is the same as FIFA 10
And so on and so forth.
So Mr Gamoc I dispute your claim that FPS is getting repetitive, I think that most genres are getting repetitive. Find me one and I’ll show you how it’s copied something else. I know, big claim.
There’s something like 7 stories in the world in which the characters are replaced and the places changed round, and that’s how every single novel/play is written. Music is the same.
    Yeh I’m being deliberately controversial.

    • Funny, I didn’t ever get any similarities between Forza 3 and Mario Kart Wii, except that you have to get somewhere before everyone else.

      • Yup. Mario Kart, Monkey Ball, Forza 3 and Split/Second are clearly identical titles. As are Super Paper Mario and FFXII.

    • Tell you what is getting repetitive

      Bloody sandbox games

go here do that, come back do this, go over there do that again…It doesn’t matter what the game is, they are all morphing into one another

GTA-Red Dead-ACII-The Saboteur-inFAMOUS, practically every single sandbox game (a world in which you’re supposed to be able to do anything at anytime) and all the devs have you do is running backwards and forwards to markers on a map either killing people or doing various missions, which while you may think are different – but are all practically the same.

Sandbox is becoming my byword for boring shite!

      • Don’t dis GTA and AC2 you horrible man! You can insult Saboteur all you like though

      • Why?

They’re all exactly the same games, just with a different ’skin’ on

      • Well i guess so but sandbox games are more about the world your in and the atmosphere. Theres enough variation between GTA and infamous to make me enjoy them but yeah they do have similar mission types for the most part

      • you should try saints row 2, brings the fun back into the sandbox genre.
and you can go streaking. :)

      • Absolutely, I loved SR2 in comparison to GTAIV – Gaming for me is about fun… there’s a enough realism in real life, without feeling the need to incorporate it in every singly dingy corner of every single game.

That’s what I’m hoping is going to be the case with The Saboteur over AC2, although the late embargo, and the lack of EA backing & promotion is concerning me.

  9. I especially agree with the last sentence. I don’t like Modern Warfare and never have, I almost fell for their clever selling tactics and bought the latest one just to play the airport level. Luckily I didn’t after having a quick go round my brothers, it sucked and as someone said in a previous article you moved like a camel in a leadsuit underwater only to find you’re being chased by underwater wolves or something like that anyway! Ok, maybe I made the underwater wolves up but if they exist, I want one as a pet!

    • I want a underwater camel! or a least someone to make a film about it

      • Blockbuster waiting to happen!

  10. Set pieces have been around since the dawn of FPS gaming. As soon as something is story driven, they had to put set pieces in. Half Life was one of the first games to get the set piece bug in a big way, and they perfected it in HL2. Infinity Ward were doing set pieces before CoD, even, with MOHAA, let alone MW…

Set pieces, then, are far from new, and copying from other examples of the same thing isn’t new either. There were Super Mario clones as soon as it first appeared, there were 3D platformers that aped SM64 as soon as that came out…

There’s always a studio which leads the way, and then everyone else follows them and tries to do their own thing with it.

  11. Huh I use flange on my guitar when i want to make something that goes a bit InSaNe

I’ve been tired of all these call of duty copy cats for ages. I completely agree that killzone mixed things up although i’ve been really disappointed with every shooter i’ve played since that.
FPS these days aren’t about being involved in the game there about set pieces and awful hollywood action

Luckily there are games like Stalker and Metro 2033 that are stirring things up a bit but there for the PC so consoles are left with a load of rubbish

  12. I finally got round to trying MW2 online after completing the single player and I do not understand why people rave about it.

KZ2 was, still is, one of the best online FPS ever. When released there were many other FPS’s out there but it raised the bar and now a year later, in my opinion, is stil the best online FPS.

MW2 does nothing really new . I am trying the BC2 beta and so far I think it blows MW2 out of the water. The kast BC single player was quite good so hoping the same for BC2.

  13. Last night, I used a flange on Cherly Cole.

    • Oo’er

  14. Bioshock, MW2, Halo 3, Left 4 Dead 2, Operation Flashpoint.
5 completely different FPS’s for you Gamoc. Now get off the band wagon of winging about FPS’s because there is plenty of innovation being made in the genre.
And MW and MW2 are excellent.

  15. Its been done before but what the FPS genre desperately needs is monkeys with shotguns.
