TSA Staff: 2010 Predictions

As everyone slowly begins to recover from seeing off 2009, it is of course now 2010. With a new year brings new possibilities, so the TheSixthAxis staff have pitched in with some predictions for the coming year. At the end of the year (providing someone reminds me) we can check to see how close the predictions were and thus who is secretly mystic Meg in disguise. Due to the timing of the predictions there were plenty of guesses for a PSN Premium subscription, which have since had to be replaced with another suggestion as it’s barely a prediction now.
As I’m sure you’ll agree, there’s a great variety of predictions but don’t just leave us to it though, comment below with three gaming predictions for the coming year. It will then act as a testement to your genius when they come true or just written proof of how wrong you really were. Either way, it’s just a bit of fun.
Alex
- PSP 2 – A touch screen based handheld, with a camera, motion sensor, 3G Internet connectivity (on top of WiFi), with a solid state drive. Therefore remaining download only.
- PlayStation 3 Minis – A new, smaller, lighter, cheaper, PS3 SDK to be released for companies to produce Minis for the PS3.
- Social gaming dominance – More SingStar, more ‘band’ games, with masses of titles for the PlayStation Motion Controller and Natal. If it can’t be played with your grandma, it won’t top the charts.
Peter
- New Wii – A new Nintendo console will be announced – probably just a WiiHD, to be released in Japan early 2011 and summer 2011 for the US and EU.
- Gears of War 3 – To be announced in the Spring at GDC but perhaps at E3 in June. It’ll be a launch titles for the new Natal-Integrated Xbox in October.
- PlayStation Motion Controller – Will be delayed until Summer, with a string of gimmicky and casual part-games for the rest of the year. The same will be said for Natal when it’s pushed out in the Autumn though.
Davs
- New Wii – A new Wii console to be released. Probably a WiiHD although will keep the current motion control technology and be priced at the current price of the Xbox 360 Elite.
- Mass Effect 2 – Announced for simultaneous release on PS3 and Xbox 360.
- PlayStation 3 – Worldwide sales of the PS3 to close the gap on the Xbox 360 down to three million.
Michael
- GTA IV DLC – Will be announced and released on the PlayStation 3.
- PlayStation 3 – Will receive another price cut dropping it down to around the £199 mark.
- PlayStation Motion Controller – The PlayStation Motion Controller will see a surge in PlayStation 3 sales and will eat massively into the Wii’s market.
Lewis
- New Xbox – Perhaps just a name, with a planned released for 2012 with Halo 4 as a launch title.
- Apple console – Joining the console world with their own hardware with a mac-esque name, perhaps iPlay.
- PlayStation 3 becomes profitable – Will see Sony making a profit off of the PlayStation 3.
Colin
- Killzone 3 – To be announced at E3 in June for a Spring 2011 release. Will include a cooperative mode.
- New Wii – A HD version of the Wii, or something similar, to be announced and released in time for Christmas 2010.
- New Xbox – A new console from Microsoft to be announced at E3 for an Autumn release.
Greg
- PlayStation 3 Price Drop – Will drop to the £199 mark for the lowest spec SKU in the second half of the year.
- Xbox Live Platinum – Microsoft will introduce a third tier of Xbox Live subscription with the Platinum membership costing around $99.99 for a years membership.
- 3D Gaming – It becomes nothing more than a curiosity for 2010.
Kris
- New Wii – Probably a WiiHD, will upscale all current Wii games, and therefore will utilise the current controllers.
- Natal – On launch Halo: Reach will be bundled with Natal, similar to how EyePet is currently. Halo: Reach will utilise voice commands and hand gestures to control and command your squad.
- PlayStation 3 – Worldwide sales of the PS3 will close to around 4 million on the Xbox 360 based on bundles of exclusive titles.
Lorcan
- Heavy Rain – Will sell poorly due to lack of advertising from Sony.
- Final Fantasy XIII – Sales for the Xbox 360 will be better in America than the PlayStation 3, however all other territories will have a great lead on PlayStation 3.
- Natal – Will receive greater sales, coverage and buzz as it’s a brand new concept, but then will die out pretty quickly and be an ultimate disappointment.
Murdo
- EU Qore – A slightly higher price than Qore, with a strong OPM presence and will include trailers, features and exclusive downloads.
- Improved Home Integration – The allowance of avatars as profile pictures will be the start, with the PlayStation 3 even logging into Home direct from boot. Making users utilise game-launching features and Home spaces even more so than before.
- New Xbox – Announcement of a new Xbox with a late 2010/early 2011 release date. To have fully integrated Natal, ensuring all games can be played without a controller if wanted. Priced at the current price of the PS3.
Zuler
- New Wii – With Wii sales stagnating, the WiiHD is announced at E3 with a planned release of late 2010/early 2011.
- Killzone 3 – Announced at E3 and dated as early 2011.
- GTA V – Announced at E3 and date for early 2011.
Rob
- Star Wars – At least three new Star Wars games will be announced, on top of the current ones expected for 2010.
- Monkey Island – The Special Edition version of Monkey Island will be released on the PSN.
- Media Molecule – The developer will continue to work solely on LittleBigPlanet titles and DLC.
Tom
- Year of the PS3 – It will be proclaimed by writers and analysts, however with the slim, a reduced price and a wealth of exclusive releases, it will begin to pull ahead of it’s competitors.
- PlayStation Motion Controller – Will launch and do well, as will Natal, however both become a passing fad and the novelty will wear off by 2011.
- Delays – As games were pushed back to March, more will now be pushed back to April/May to avoid the Spring
TuffCub
- Online Multiplayer – Will become even more of a necessity and games that don’t require it, not that it makes sense for, will still include it.
- Original IPs – More and more sequels will hit the charts as original IPs are not a viable revenue stream for puslishers.
- Natal – Will be released and the Daily Mail will have a field day with linking reports to paedophilia
Lee
- Mass Effect 2 – To be announced for release on the PlayStation 3 due to EA’s low recent revenue streams. A Mass Effects – Animated movie will be released on Blu-Ray to fill in the gaps for PS3 owners.
- Splinter Cell: Conviction – Will release on the Xbox 360 but as a timed exclusive. Will be announced for the PS3 shortly after release.
- PlayStation Motion Controller – Will release in Spring 2010 but will be marketed so poorly it will struggle in sales.

I think I agree with Lewis mostly to be honest. A new XBox is inevitable and Apple need something new to move onto now that they’ve pretty much conquered the MP3 player and Mobile games markets. Plus within a whole year the PS3 might be able to get cheaper components and things if the economic situation gets better so Sony may well be able to turn a profit there.

Some interesting predictions…namely Davs’ Mass Effect 2, Lewis’ Apple Console and Lorcan’s FFXIII sales seem unlikely but would definitely make for an interesting year.
Personally, I predict 2010 will be the year of the Dreamcast.
On the PSP2, has Sony ever mentioned the 10 year lifespan pertaining to their handheld as well as their home consoles?

My 2010 Predictions:
Call of Duty 7 will be released, Guitar Hero 6 will be released, and Uc3 will be announced at VGA.

Yeah, I call it cod 7, but it seems now Infinity Ward is making a new series called Modern Warfare (Anyone heard of it?) and treyach is making World at War (based on large scale conflicts, such as vietnam (Rumoured cod7 location) and WWII) series. But I’ll keep calling them Call of Duty.

ok here goes with my predictions that have just popped into my very fuzzy head:
a new burnout
mgs will dissapoint ( really dont want that to come true), and a sons of liberty remake for the 360 is also annouced
psp go 1000
£99 wii
natal/ps wand will fail because ms and sony will market it at the wrong market~ ie real gamers, and thecasuals will just see the wii price point and assumeits all the same but cheaper.
starhawk will take the world by storm
and craig david will either make a come back, or die

The Last Guardian slips into a 2011 release. inFamous 2 set for Fall release. Lightbox Interactive reveals Starhawk. Jaffe debuts Twisted Metal HD. Killzone 3 teaser trailer debut at E3; no release until late 2011. Resistance 3 set for Holiday 2010 release. PS3 Syphon Filter trailer released. Several new IPs coming,
PSP
3G PSP or 3G PSP add-on accessory; Could also be PSP2. Uncharted PSP game revealed at E3. More portable versions of PS3 franchises.
PSN
PSN makes its way onto other devices: cell phones, Laptops, TVs, etc. Music Service

Supermarkets and online sales will push specialist game shops to the verge of extinction and dissuade publishers from taking risks with more niche games in Europe. Not good news…

There’s no bigger backer of indie shops then me (look back through 2 years worth of comments & rants to see), but I don’t enjoy paying £20 extra for the privilege.
As a form of entertainment very few games are worth the £40-45 they charge, so if I can get something for £25 I’m going to take it, the majority of games I won’t even spend that on as I’ll just add them to my rental list, play them for 2 or 3 days and send them back.

I predict 1-FF7 remake PS3 exclusive
2-EA will release a fifa,tiger woods,nfl,nba,etc
3-A new cod,gears of war,halo,etc
4-Sony to dominate with exclusives
5-Elder scolls 5 announcement
6-A multitude of rubbish games that will be hailed as goty contenders due to people having a smaller brain than a sheep and believing in dev hype.

some people being a bit optimistic about mass effect 2 coming out for the ps3, a simultaneous release seems exceedingly unlikely just a months from the 360 release date, but i do expect an announcement of ps3 versions of the first two games before the end of the year and an announcement that part 3 will be released on ps3 the same day as the 360 version, except in eutope where scee delay everything, couldn’t help myself
i like the sound of a mass effect anime thing though, shame they’ll use the male shephard, would be cool if they released two versions with a male and female shephard.

Some good predictions there
Activision/Blizzard to launch own console bundled with World of Warfare(persistant online subscription COD game) and World or Warcraft and therefore cancel all work on competing consoles.
Sony to cut PS3 price to a sub £200 level & PSPgo to sub £150 to boost sales, it works.
WiiHD to launch in the Autumn, it bombs forcing Nintendo to concentrate on the handheld market only.

All of the predictions seem realistic, will be interesting if at the end of 2010, or half-way through, someone does a follow up story to see how accurate the predictions are!

Here are my 3:
1. New consoles and disc formats – The big 3 will announce new consoles for 2013/2014 at E3, only this time, each console will have their own disc format, with Nintendo and Sony announcing advanced versions of the Wii Optical Disc and Blu-Ray with MS announcing their own disc format.
iPhone 3GM – Apple will release a new iPhone that will include a slide-out touch controller, magnetic charging, near PS2 graphics, a new Games-only App Store, Facebook Online multiplayer on select games, and full retail games in the form of game cards (much like the Mini SD cards).
More First-Party Games – With OnLive now released, we’ll start seeing more first-party games from the big 3, giving them a huge advantage over OnLive.

My biggest prediction is regarding Social gaming dominance, hopefully a very sucessful launch of the PlayStation Motion Controller and Improved Home Integration throughout the year.
