We’re a couple of days behind on this, but it appears that the musical genius and Pixeljunk collaborator Baiyon is working with the impressively hard working Q-Games chaps on a new music visualiser for the PS3.
There’s no details yet apart from the name, which appears to be “Pixeljunk lifelike” – sadly a rather ambiguous title which manages to give nothing away and yet get me rather excited.

We’re assuming this’ll be out in the next Firmware update, which is due in June alongside the PS3′s HDMI 1.4 booster to enable 3D gaming, 3D movies, 3D cross-game chat and 3D built-in God Of War III emulation.

Considering it’s coming with the 3D firmware, It’s possible this could be a 3D visualiser?

A three dimensional visualiser? That sounds so amazing. PlayStation LSDReplacementService?

Perhaps, like the Move, it’s meant to complement the experience not replace it.. O.o

This is welcome news but frankly there are two things that piss me off about my PS3 (which I love btw):
1) Not enough visualisers! This has to be the easiest, cheapest and lowest impact add-on they can make yet we’re stuck with the same three option for what… two years now?
2) Why the F can I no longer listen to my music whilst I view my photos? I loved, LOVED, being able to start a playlist then put a slideshow on. Why OH WHY SONY did you remove this?

Works fine change the Output Frequency in the music settings.

Your settings are wrong – you need to change the Frequency in the Music menu (I forget the exact option as I’m not at my PS3). I think it’s 48hz or something, it’s the default setting on new PS3′s so most people don’t have this problem.
.
As for the visualisers the more the merrier! Mind you I wouldn’t say it’s the be all and end all – if I’m listening to music on my PS3 it’s normally during a photo slideshow or while I’m doing something else on my PS3 (e.g. Life with PlayStation or something or playing a game) or via VidZone for the music videos. If I just want to listen to music there isn’t really any need to have the TV on at all – just my PS3 and A/V Receiver.
.
Isn’t it true that QGames did most of the visualisations for the PS3 XMB – e.g. the default dynamic theme and all the other visualisers etc? Or am I getting them confused with someone else? Speaking of dynamic themes, they should have the option of playing the dynamic theme background during music playback too…
.
A 3D visualisation could be interesting – but again why sit with 3D glasses on to *listen* to music?!

3d cross game chat!! Can’t wait, do you need the plastic cup and piece of string to make this work properly?

Yeah, but the official ones are so overpriced.

But will this visualiser actually react… to the music (the reaction in the ‘lava lamp’ vis is a bit late).
And I really hope the 3D-ness is optional.

I still love the Earth visualiser and the pixeljunk one could be cool but i would love to see something that syncs to the music.

why is everyone assuming this is going to be free and part of firmware? It could be a new PSN product.

If it is a PSN item, what are chances that it’ll work with music CDs as opposed to imported or downloaded.

That’s what I thought when I saw that it was Pixeljunk.

NO 3D PLEASE!
I dont think any of us have a 3D tv or are willing to pay the ridiculous amount for one considering theres fuck all content around and then having to sit with the uncomfortable plastic lump of platic on our faces while we listen to music, what the what!?

Speak for yourself… its not like its launching tomorrow with no content is it?
Sky’s FREE 3D service is launching to HD customers in April, Blu-ray movies not to far from that time as well, and there is a body of evidence that a large proportion of Sony’s PS3 titles are being retro fitted with 3D – along with all games currently in development like GT5, and presumably KZ3 and many many more.
The prediction is you won’t be able to buy a none-3DTV after the next couple of years as standard HD goes the way of the CRT

You may not like it, but it’s coming and that’s that. But think of it this way, you don’t have to get involved with any of this 3D business if you don’t want to. It’s totally optional. Sony is just adding this stuff to the PS3 so it’s 3D enabled for those who do want to. They need to start adding 3D content early on so they have a head start. If this visualiser is 3D based, then that’s great for those who have 3D equipment, but it’s not like you won’t be able to use the visualiser without a 3DTV.
Everything is totally optional. Remember that.
