25British sci-fi author Richard Morgan has been unveiled as the writer of Crytek’s upcoming Crysis 2. His first foray into games writing, fans of the genre will instantly recognise Morgan as the creator behind the visceral Takeshi Kovacs series. Yes, I am a fan.
Speculation has been rife regarding Morgan’s involvement in the graphically impressive sequel ever since he mentioned on his blog last year that he was talking with EA about his possible involvement in three game properties. Teasing that he had been “flying back and forth to [Crytek location] Berlin” to work on the mysterious property, what has been assumed for months has now finally been confirmed.
For the uninitiated, Morgan writes hard-hitting, graphic and technically speculative novels set in the near future. Altered Carbon, his first novel and our introduction to bad-ass Envoy-extraordinaire Takeshi Kovacs, went on to win the Philip K. Dick Award for Best Novel in 2003.
As for the other games Morgan is involved in, his blog also hints that he’s been “consulting” on numerous pitches over at EA. Of course, the big news we (OK, I) are waiting on is that Altered Carbon is getting the game treatment. With the film already in pre-production (to be directed by James McTeigue – assistant director on the Matrix films and director in his own right on V For Vendetta and the recent Ninja Assassin), such a game is surely only a matter of time.
A story where you can download your personality into augmented “sleeves” and the rich can potentially live forever? If you’re a fan of writing that drips of equal amounts of high-tech, sex and violence, Altered Carbon comes highly recommended.
