Already lambasting the story-telling (or lack of) found in Modern Warfare 2, science fiction superstar and scriptwriter of Crytek’s Crysis 2 Richard Morgan has now fired a volley across the bow of Microsoft’s flagship Halo titles for their lack of story-telling quality. Labelling the plot as “full of […] archetypal characters,” Morgan also calls out the games’ dialogue as particularly poor.
“I don’t like Halo at all. The reason that its fiction doesn’t work has nothing to do with the fact that you don’t get to see Master Chief’s face, it’s because of lines like ‘Okay … I’m gonna get up there and kill those guys’.”
Claiming the series lacks “real emotional effect,” it would appear no game is safe from the writer’s acerbic tongue. Actually, he apparently liked Uncharted 2’s plot, and claims Dead Space as one of his favourite games ever. Nonetheless, these are strong words from a newcomer who has an unproved record in game writing; words we’re sure people will be all too ready to ram down his throat if Crysis 2 doesn’t deliver the emotional equivalent of Bambi exploding in a puppy orphanage.
Interestingly, Dead Space is also over at EA, the publisher Morgan has been consulting with of late on a “number of properties.” Could Morgan have had a hand in the latest Isaac Clarke tale? You may recall Dead Space’s protagonist is no longer his laconic, reticent self in the upcoming sequel. Who better to put words in the mouth of the interstellar Necromorph slicer than a sci-fi luminary like Morgan. Food for thought no doubt.
