Looks like Sony Cambridge are working on PlayTV 2. SPOnG has an interview with the guys responsible for LittleBigPlanet PSP, and alongside news on more LittleBigPlanet DLC and Move Superstars is this little snippet:

We’re still working on Play TV, Play TV 2. And then we have other guys working on other concepts…

Don’t really care about the ‘other concepts’ just now, but Play TV 2?  Yes please.

The guys over at SPOnG are lovely. Like, proper nice chaps.

Thanks, MasonMk.

  1. HD?
    Awesome, will buy

    • it’s already HD.

      • alright, HD in FRANCE. But it’s not for lack of ability, then, if it doesn’t do HD where you’re from.

      • It can’t decode HD cos the UK uses a different codec or frequency or whatever that PlayTV receives.

  2. i feel kind of silly for giving my little brother my play tv after i got freeview. i miss the old girl

  3. Freeview HD, with series link and the other missing features and it could be awesome

    • That’s software though, I’m guessing this’ll be HD, hopefully the features you mentioned will be across the PlayTV range, doubt I’ll upgrade, the PlayTV I have now will be a good PVR and my TV will have freeview HD so I’ll use that for normal (live) viewing

    • And mpeg4 ?

    • Just had a thought, if it wants to carry the Freeview HD logo in the UK it has to support IPTV services like iPlayer, I know we already have that on the PS3 but ALL Freeview HD equipment will support Project Canvas

    • why don’t you guys freeview HD? i got a play tv last year when they were released in australia and they’re freeview HD. surely they wouldn’t have to release a completely new device for that? i’m sure it was firmware…

      • just read your comment below regarding my Q cc. i get it now… play tv HD for UK or bust!

  4. And this time make it come to the rest of europe.

    • All of the UK would be nice.

  5. As long as the tuner can cope with a strong signal, I’m sold; I’m tired of seeing ‘Failed to initialise tuner’, when even the cheap digibox that came with the aerial works without complaint.

  6. It’s all well and good telling us playtv2 is in development but what is the difference between it and the old one?

    • PlayTV can’t handle HD, HD terrestrial is being broadcast using a different method that requires new hardware. So initially the difference is that you can recieve HD on the new one, when it eventually comes to market.
If you want to watch HD right now, and you are in a broadcast area, look for hardware that supports DVB-T2 not DVB-T

      • weird, cause my playtv plays HDTV channels. which it wouldn’t if it just didn’t work, right?

It supports HD. Prove me wrong then, if you please.

      • HD in the UK requires different hardware as it works over the DVB-T2 standard… No Freeview equipment (Inc. PlayTV) is compatible with it, this is not the case throughout the rest of the world as they have implemented HD over existing DVB-T technology (which is what PlayTV is)

  7. Got the first one when it came out and will definitely get this!!!

  8. I’m still not sure about this since I only watch Dr Who, Top Gear, Harry Hill and the odd quiz shows like Have I got news for you which the last episode was just EPIC LOLS and Qi ‘n’ that

  9. Well if they bring this one to ireland and add internet TV then I’m sold
