We’ve know for a while that the next game to feature Lara Croft won’t be a Tomb Raider game. Crystal Dynamics have been working on Lara Croft and the Guardian of Light for some time but Eurogamer believe they have details on the next full Tomb Raider game.
According to a Eurogamer “source”, the game is due for release around Christmas 2011 on PC, PS3 and Xbox 360. Naughty Dog managed to roll out Uncharted 2 just two years after Drake’s first outing, which could mean Uncharted 3 is just 16 months away. Christmas 2011 could well see Drake and Lara go head-to-head.
Not much is known about the next Tomb Raider, though rumours that it would receive a reboot have been floating around since a document was leaked last July. Eurogamer’s source is believed to have confirmed the next game would “explore the origins of a young and inexperienced Lara Croft who investigates tombs in an island off the coast of Japan.” Their source would not confirm the name of the next Tomb Raider which is believed to be called Downfall.
Ex-Crystal Dynamics artist Joel Boucquemont’s site has been showing off some of his handy work recently, some of which is apparently related to the new Tomb Raider game. The images depict a modern ruined city which you can view on the Digital Painting site here. These images alone have already stirred my interest, but I don’t expect much to be announced before the release of the Guardian of Light.

Although either Uncharted game is far better than TR:Underworld, I still think I’d get both Uncharted 3 and TR:GoL :)

I agree,
Although I’ve been disappointed with Tomb Raider for years, its still worth a punt, because it is…. Tomb Raider

Those digital paintings are beautiful. Like the bastard child of Giger, HalfLife2 and Uncharted2!
However, they relate to the new Tomb Raider game? Wowzers! One to follow just to find out where they’re taking all this.

agreed – they remind me of the concept art for Resistance 2 but the city appears more modern before its been trashed

Exactly. They weren’t what I was expecting. Underworld wasn’t great but there are a lot worse games in the genre. Uncharted has just set the bar so high it’s going to be a challenge for Naughty Dog let alone anyone else to surpass it.

The imgaes look very good but they don’t really match with the idea of Tomb Raider or the concept of it being set near Japan (as all the roadsigns etc are in english)
Interesting to see what comes of this though.

Looks more like ‘Fallout: Tomb Raider’ than an actual tomb raider game but I look forward to seeing how miss Croft has a hand in all this apparent chaos. My money is on either alternate realities or time travel being a key.

It will take one hell of a reboot to compete with Uncharted 3 (supported in marketing terms by the Uncharted film as well as existing fans of the first two games).
Haven’t they done the origin story of Lara several times already? There was the mentor backstory in The Last Revelation, There was young Lara in Chronicles, there was her Mother backstory for Legend, I’m pretty sure her father has been covered in some of the games and in the films too I think, and there is also a 3rd film in the works about Lara’s origins!
It’s the last point that makes me worry that the next game will be little more than a movie tie-in to adopt the new origins created for the film, which could kill the franchise once and for all (based on the quality of most movie tie-ins).
Tomb Raider was the ‘system seller’ that go me to buy a PlayStation (along with Resi Evil) and I have played and completed every game since, even Angel of Darkness! I really can’t decide what direction I would want Lara to take, the last game was disappointing as it was outclassed by Uncharted and felt a bit stale even though on a technical level it was the best game of the franchise so there is no doubt it needs reboot. I’m just not sure reinventing her origin story again is necessarily the best way to approach it…
Maybe they should go the other way with an older wiser Lara that can handle a gun properly and relies more on technology and new gameplay elements rather than free climbing, maybe introducing a young apprentice (or full team) to do the heavy lifting (and allow for co-op/online elements). I can imagine Lara as a couger!

i would not be surprised to see them take a page out of the assassin’s creed book, make the climbing a bit more free flowing, you can let lara worry about where to grab onto and you just worry about where you want to go, but don’t go too far, like toby gard;s galleon, where you didn’t have direct control of the hero, you just pointed in the direction you wanted him to go and he’d attempt to head in that direction, didn’t really work too well.
it would be great to see lara in a more modern setting too, got to have some tombs but some more modern locales as well would be nice.

I think a reboot is in order.
It needs a great original title to survive, especially with Drake breathing down their necks. Uncharted3 should hopefully be something special.

Those shots look more like gears of war art than TR
I was soo happy when they put lara back into the tombs, and now it looks like she’ll be back in the city…sad. But if they throw in a post apocalyptic world I’m done with her. I thought the general consciences was that lara is best in the Tomb, and if they would just fix the shooting mechanic fans would be happy. TR is a decent franchise that still has a big fanbase, it wouldn’t be hard to release a TR game that could out sell U3- since U3 is sony only… also a simultaneous release could really increase TR sales for the 360. TR isn’t dead, it’s just lost in a glitch-fest tomb created by devs with poor vision.
